Forums - Gaming - Activision CEO very disappointed over lack of price cuts.

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/kotick-disappointed-over-lack-of-price-cuts

Activision CEO Bobby Kotick has expressed his disappointment in the lack of price cut announcements made the three platform holders at E3 this year.

Neither Microsoft, Sony or Nintendo made any move to change the price points of any of their hardware platforms, a move which Kotick feels is out of step with the consumer in tricky economic conditions.

"I was disappointed not to see any sort of aggressive price cutting," he told Bloomberg. "Of all the things that the hardware companies need to be doing right now, it’s recognising the difficulties of the economy and pricing their hardware appropriately."

Kotick joins a number of industry execs, not the least of which is US retailer GameStop's CEO Dan DeMatteo, who has regularly talked up the chances of price cuts for hardware.

But while Microsoft already has the lowest-priced next-gen console on the market, and Sony is widely expected to make an announcement on the PlayStation 3 at this year's TGS, Nintendo has taken the unusual step of increasing the price of the Wii in a bid to stave off the effects of the strengthening yen.

By the way...what does he mean by 'Nintendo has increased the price of the Wii'?...is he talking about Europe?

Guy uspet that thing that plays his games but he makes no money off of isn't cheaper.

No kidding. I'm sure major music companies are upset the Ipod costs so much.

That was only in Britain

And I still fully expect a PS3 price drop when the slim is brought out in august/september

maybe he should lead by example and cut the price on old games such as cod4 (which in my region costs $10 more than it did when it launched)

*cough* hypocrite *cough*

Call of Duty 4 is literally more money than when it launched. I bought it day one for 59.99 and now its like 64.99 or something weird.

How can he say companies should cut prices (which would lose sony billions more) when he can't even lower the price of a 1 1/2 year old game to say 49.99 or lower.

AFAIK Nintendo increased the price of the Wii to retailers in UK (due to the "collapse" of the British Pound), but retailers haven't increased the price consumers pay. It just means retailers make less profit on Wiis. But I think in Sweden there was a price increase to consumers.

Anyway, if Sony actually intends to sell 13 million PS3s this fiscal year as they stated, they need to drop the price by $100 and soon. Then it will be red ink all over of course, but it's either that or failing to achieve their goals.

Ehhhh, the consoles are probably as cheap as they are going to get this year. If any console gets a price cut it probably will be the PS3, and I anticipate $49.....at the most if any.

IMO the freaking PSP Go already needs a $50 price cut.......

The PSP Go is probably priced as $250 to subsidize the losses they'll need to take from a PS3 price cut.

I'm sure they'll cut PSP Go's price pretty quick if it doesn't sell well, but it could still backfire if people subconsciously associate the PSP Go with "expensive" (as may also have happened with the PS3).

NJ5, if GT5 really comes out this year, what do you think about a slim PS3 + GT5 bundle?...it´d seem like an obvious move on Sony´s part.
