Forums - Gaming - The all-involving mega-thread of statistics regarding VGChartz Top 100

All that needs be said about the list is it has a large bias in favor of newer, crappier games at the expense of out-and-out classics. I'd wager a large majority of those who voted have played few, if any, Atari VCS or NES games, for example. If they had, we might have seen a few VCS games in there and we would have seen a hell of a lot more than 3 NES games of course. It's tough not to laugh at a top 100 games of all time list that has twice as many Xbox games (not to mention PS2/X360/PS1/Wii/PS3/etc) as NES games.

It's easy to say people are stupid and have bad taste. It's a common belief on these forums. However, this is what the forumgoers on VGChartz actually thinks. It's as real as a list like this can ever get. If your top games are not on the list, it only shows that you have a different taste than the majority of people on this site.

Well, first off, as you can see since you quoted me, I didn't say anyone was "stupid" at all.  So that is just putting words in my mouth, which I'll thank you not to do.

I realize the way the list was made.  I simply made comments reflecting my opinion of the list, that's all.  I know why it came out the way it did - that's one reason I lamented what made the list and what didn't.  The fact that games like Contra and Mega Man 2, widely viewed as some of the best games ever made for any system and games that remain immensely popular and spawning sequels today, didn't even make the list, compared to what did make the list, tells you a lot about the relative game-playing experience of the voters overall, for example.

"All that needs be said about the list is it has a large bias in favor of newer, crappier games at the expense of out-and-out classics." This phrase, incidentally the first phrase of your post, is a lamentation over the unablility of the avarage user to have opinions that are 'right' or 'good taste'. The same can be heard about many different subjects, where what's popular is seldom considered quality by those in the know. It's usually based on the belief that people do not know what they want and they cannot tell quality from shit, i.e, they are stupid and have bad taste.

So while you did not come right out and say it, the underlying assumption is there.

"It's tough not to laugh at a top 100 games of all time list that has twice as many Xbox games as NES games." This phrase ridicules the opinions of the people that voted, saying that they didn't know what they were voting for and that they were wrong for voting how they did. In short, they are stupid and have bad taste.

I can understand your objections. However, they do not in any way invalidate the list as what it is: The opinions of VGChartz forumgoers. If you browse around the forum you will find that this list corresponds very well to the way people around here think and talk about games. And that's the main way any such list should be interpreted.

Just admit that you were wrong about what I said.  You've said as much but can't seem to just admit it and apologize.  It's okay, this is just an Internet forum, I don't really care (and neither should you).  I didn't call anyone stupid, end of discussion.

If you believe that my implication was that you said 'People are stupid', then I didn't really get my point across. Bad choice of words, perhaps. I guess 'say' should have been replaced by 'think'. For that I apologise. My intention was only to reveal the underlying assumptions in your post and explain why I think that they are inaccurate.

In my second post I tried to show you how I interpreted your statements and what led me to believe that you share this belief. If you want to say something about those interpretetions, please do. I'm not above admitting my assumptions are wrong, but I will hold to them unless they are contested.

So to summarize:
Sorry, I should have used 'think' instead of 'say'.
I think you subscribe to the idea that people in general are stupid and have bad taste.

Meh, semantics suck.  Yes, I do think many people who voted have bad taste and more likely are ignorant when it comes to games older than they likely are.  But whatever, don't really care.
