I think Nintendo already has their next console finished hardware wise. They're probably just fiddling around with the controller and input stuff.

If the next machine is supposed to be PS3/360 level or a little more powerful (I doubt Nintendo would need more than that) ... ATi and IBM would have no problem with that type of a request.

Having your next console finalized this far ahead of time would not only be unprecidented, but brilliant.

Nintendo does this handhelds all the time. They'll complete a handheld and sometimes never bring it out to market.

Like I said, a PS3-360 chipset or something slightly better (or worse) ... either way is no problem for IBM and ATi to whip up for them.

Common practice from all console makers to start planning the next system as soon as the current one launches. It's just when can they launch it.

Yeah...the Wii is Nintendo's new gameboy....as in they won't make a new one for 10 years.

Except the DS is Nintendo's "new Game Boy" and they already have "remixed" the DS several times.

DSi could be a new platform on its own, it has 4X the RAM of the old DS and a more powerful processor on top of an added camera.

Nintendo specifically stated that the DS is not replacing the gameboy when it first came out, now we all know this was not physically true but I think they meant that the DS would work different and evolve different than the gameboy and it has. That said I think Nintendo will do with the Wii what they have been doing with the DS, that is incremental (3-4 years) improvements - I just don't know how well it will work for a console, the handheld market is a little different.

BTW - they got the marketing idea from Apple and the iPod so looking at the parallels between the evolution of the iPod and the DS should show the kinds of thing we can expect from the Wii, it's just a matter of how it translates to a console instead of a handheld device.

Currently dreaming of: DKC4 or Sonic the Hedgehog 4 (classic 2D platformers) for WiiWare, Smash Bros. for DSi, New Super Mario World for DSi, a Wii remake or true sequel of Final Fantasy Tactics.

One down, hopefully more awesomeness to come.

My feeling even though Nintendo may not have explicitly planned it out this way, the next Wii will be out in fall 2011, exactly 5 years from the first Wii. It'll just work out that way, I think by 2011, even Nintendo's developers will be wanting a more powerful chipset and they'll have had time to sit and study Sony and MS' motion control approaches.

Nintendo probably have a successor to the DS ready to go in a lab somewhere. They're constantly playing, researching & fiddling with technology. I would think that Microsoft are probably further down the next true Next Gen road. It's likely that in the a top secret lab Microsoft are already experimenting with their first games for the next Xbox. Consider how fast technology moves and that the X360 technology is already 4 years old. That said, I'm quite happy with my steam powered DS Lite and amazed that they pulled off GTA:Chinatown Wars.

i don,t think this is that big of a deal. he said that they will show it when developers say they can no longer improve Wii games. We're a long way away from then
