Forums - Microsoft - Project Natal Exercise Video could be the killer ap

Damn straight you didn't realize who you were arguing with. I'm not letting you off that easy. That video is a representation of what MS want NATAL to do. It is also a Demo, meaning that they were (let me speak slowly here) d-e-m-o-n-s-t-r-a-t-i-n-g it's capabilities. In case you didn't see the vid (I still don't believe you did, otherwise we would not be having this debate) there is a girl in there driving a race car, she happens to be pretending to hold a steering wheel, when she moves her hands, the car turns. Its a pretty simple concept, why you can't grasp that is beyond me. Lets put it this way, this technology is already alive and working in the PC world. That right their trashes your whole argument. Also, ALL technology follows a linear progression. No way around it, there are certainly branches off that linear progress, but each branch progresses in a linear fashion.  I would say walk away before you pour gasoline on the ashes that were your argument, and light it on fire...buuuut, I am a pyro at heart, so, light away!

Don't make me post the facepalm pic again, please.

"Demo" in the video game industry is used to indicate that it is working with software that people can actually interact with. That wasn't what that was. It was a concept video, a teaser using pre-made, pre-rendered footage showing what may be possible if Natal works like they want it to. And no, the fact that the girl was driving a car doesn't automatically make it make sense - her feet never moved and nothing she did indicated that she was controlling her own speed. The fact that it happened in this pretend video does not mean that the pretend driving she was doing actually made sense. It didn't. People have noticed this before now.

Look, when you take a concept video like that and present it as "facts" or "proof", you've defeated your own argument.

You of course completely ignored the fact that this techniology is working on PCs and has been for several years. The company that MS has helping them (actually I beleive MS bough the company) has quite a lot of experiance in Motion control. That video was a DEMO, not a concept, so once again, you are wrong. The fact that in the live demo at E3 as well as the Milo demo that they showed, was very real, and it showcased how NATAL sees you move. This is still in it's developmental stages as I have said MANY times. Just seeing what MS has been able to do in a few months, should give you some indication of what they will be able to do when they finally release it. Also, I'm getting tired of saying this, but MS did say that they plan on releasing Halo and COD for NATAL. Given their whole campeighn was focused on YOU ARE THE CONTROLLER, they will have NO silly dongle, and NATAL will see you "pull" a trigger. When NATAL comes out, you sir, will be eating all the crow I can stuff in your face.

I'm not saying that the tech doesn't work. The tech is proven. But the applications for it are both problematic in concept and as-of-yet nonexistent in the sphere of the concepts that Microsoft intends to leverage them toward.

Yes, they showed that Natal can see you move. I'm aware. I saw the ball-kicking and so forth.

That video was not a demo. None of that was real software. You are kidding yourself if you pretend otherwise. I find it hard to believe that we're actually having this discussion.

If you think that's how the shooter problem will go, that's fine, but we have no reason to believe that it will be that sensitive yet.

I firmly believe it will be sensitive enough to run a FPS, it's 3D, and looks to be fairly sensitive from what I've seen in just the E3 video. They obviously have some lag issues and other little glitches to work through, but with the help of the game devs. I have no doubt that they will pull it off.

Khuutra what do you mean by tilt? Give an example please.

And they had Burnout running with Natal, you use your feet as the gas and brake. The guys said he wouldn't use those gestures in a full game, but that is what they used for such short notice.

We can argue about sensitivity when it is closer to being a real product ... But how do you move (forward, backwards, strafe left, strafe right), crouch, jump, rotate camera (left, right, up, down), reload weapons, and switch weapons?

How do you know that the lag isn't inherant of needing multiple datapoints to identify motion and (therfore) always being several camera-frames behind the user's motion? How do you know they will be able to solve the glitch problems? How do you know that Milo wasn't entirely scripted, and you could tell him to "Go to hell" and he would gladly continue along his script?

You seem completely unwilling to consider any possiblity except that everything that was shown was entirely possible and will be better than you could possibly imagine ... Which is unrealistic and is setting yourself up for disapointment.

I outlined several gaming possibilities in this thread here.

And I can go ahead and tell you that Milo is not expected to be the most intelligent AI ever created. Not even the creators think that. It is the interaction capabilities that are what is neat about it. Point somewhere and make a shocked face and the boy could probably recognize what you are doing. This has to be programmed for of course, but the ability to recognize a 3D space and facial expressions adds quite a lot of immersive capabilities.

didn't EA confirmed that they are working on EA Active versions for both ps3 and 360?
they said that they've seen Natal few months ago and are trying to bring this fitness game to 360.

Even ignoring the fact they had two live demos up on stage the tech was demonstrated for a number of reporters in private sessions with a modified version of Burnout and from all accounts it worked very well:
