Xbox LIVE is completely down for a good portion of the userbase: http://twitter.com/majornelson
I haven't been able to get on all afternoon, so I've only been able to play single player so far.
you really cant track live, alot of people, including myself, for a good portion did not go online, just played the campaign, and its probably a good % of people did that.
With regard to Call of Duty 4 having an ultra short single player campaign, I guess it may well have been due to the size limitations of DVD on the XBox 360, one of various limitations multi-platform game designers will have to take into consideration-Mike B

Rofl first I thought your comment was biased against Halo owners but then I found out that you mean 'no Xbox live'. |
Lol.. good thing i didn't misspell "live" to be "life" then.. or that would have sealed the deal :P
| Dolla Dolla said: Here is Halo 3's bar: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6456214/ $125 million --> 2.3 million in sales between US & Canada in the first 24 hours. If Halo 3 is less than 2.3 million in one day ... "Disappointment Total." |
I wouldn't call it a disappointment in it doesn't reach that number, here's why:
Lets compare the systems at the time of each game's release:
Installed base:
Xbox - ~19.9 million
Xbox 360 - ~11.1 million
Cost of console:
Xbox - $149.99
Xbox 360 - $279.99 (Core), $349.99 (Premium), $449.99 (Elite)
Price of game (base):
Halo 2: $49.99
Halo 3: $59.99
Not only all that but Halo 2 was released in November, one of the busiest shopping months of the year. Anyways what I'm trying to say is that even if Halo 3 doesn't beat Halo 2's numbers it shouldn't be seen as a disappointment considering the cost of admission to play the game.
Don't know how accurate this is but saw this online:
In even more Halo 3 related news, initial sales for Master Chief’s latest incarnation are coming in, and the Xbox 360 exclusive title has sold through 1.8 million copies during the first 8 hours of release. The break down is 1.5 million sold through pre-orders, with an additional 300,000 copies sold without pre-order.Estimations predict that a total of 950,000 units will be sold within the first 24 hours, bringing the grand total to 2.45 million. Microsoft has released the game in three SKUs ranging in price from 59.99 to 129.99, and the that the average sale price of the title is currently at $78.00. This means that, Microsoft has already made an estimated 140.4 million dollars and is expected to cash-in on 191.1 million dollars before the end of the day. This would put Halo 3 at the top of the list for any form of entertainment’s top “one day salesâ€.
Bungie and Bill Gates will be rolling on a bed strewn with money laughing maniacally and kissing one another profusely before the week is finished. Can’t you feel the love?

| Erik Aston said: Well, day 1 Halo 3 sales SHOULD be lower than day 1 Halo 2 sales. Halo 2 had a larger install base and a lower price threshold. Even MS themselves never said they were aiming to beat Halo 2's day 1 unit sales, just revenue. IIRC, Halo 2 did about 2.5M first day, for $125M in revenue. MS actually wanted to beat Spiderman 3's $150M first day opening, to have the biggest 1 day total in entertainment history. So if this 1M online transfers to 2M purchases, they would need the average price to be $75 to beat $150M, which could be possible with a minimum price of $60, and the highest SKU well above $100. At worst, they should beat that Halo 2 number. I expect there'll be an MS press release tomorrow or Thursday. |
Hrmm. Good analysis. By your analysis though it seems unlikely that they will reach their goal of beating Spider-Man 3 with the early reports, unless jasonnic's link is accurate. However, I'm not too sure about that one since it would mean that 60% of Halo 3 owners never logged online even though their games come with 48 hours of free Xbox Live.

Nazna, all the most basic LIVE functions (including online play) have been down nearly all day. People are not staying away from online play because they don't have the functionality, but because the servers have keeled over from stress.
heh, I predicted that the Live servers would die by Halo 3. Should have put it in my sig like everybody else =)
