They could possibly be just ill informed(much to their dismay). @Gnizmo Uh...I know that XI came out on 360, but it didn't do to well at all. My thoughts on this was that it was probably due to the double fee(partially corrected by heruaman, who gives some facts on it not actually requiring Gold Memb.). And I say it did challenge WOW only because very FEW subscription based MMORPGs with actual depth and high level graphics survive. Only MMO's I have ever heard of actually keeping up was Everquest and FFXI. This is not to say that they have even grazed WOW's success, just that in comparison to all the failures they have done quite well. It is a very similar situation to the PSP and DS. DS has PSP by a mile, but PSP is the ONLY handheld to EVER survive against the mighty Nintendo Handheld brand. FFXI is PSP as WOW is to DS. |
2 charts to demonstrate what I am talking about. First the one that shows WoW, Lineage, Lineage 2, and Runsescape against FFXI and every other MMO above 200k. http://www.mmogchart.com/Chart1.html FFXI is doing well for itself, but no it is not in any way shape or form competing with WoW. Thats like saying you or I could compete in a pro football match. It is just kind of embarassing to compare the two.
http://www.mmogchart.com/Chart1.html Second chart. See that sharp dive? Thats WoW. It launched right in that range and tanked every other MMOs subscription base. Mopped the floor with them. Notice that the 4 super large MMOs from the last graph aren't on here because they are in a completely different league in terms of popularity. FFXI was a highly successful MMO, but nothing note worth in terms of success. It was briefly the top dog of the Western style of MMO but now it is hardly even a foot note.
