It won't be called a spin off -- maybe a "Lightning Bold Game" or it could be called "Metal Gear Raiden".
Either way we can't tell what the game will be like without seeing more of it.

I predicted that it'd come, and it did. He did say he wants to work on mutiple platforms, after all. Mattrick calling him and the "!" sound weren't too pleasant, but were very predictable.
I watched the conference from my PS3, during that announcement it must've went red with shame, hah.
Well, as long as it isn't X360 exclusive/PS3 exclusive to begin with, no harm done.
A spinoff isn't always as good as the source from which it is spun and could be quite different than what you expect. Think Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles or any of the other spinoffs. I'm not saying 360 fans shouldn't be excited. Just be prepared that it might not be as good and may very well play MUCH differently than what you expect. You may have gotten Metal Gear in name only and not the gameplay style you were hoping for.
Keep this in mind when reading what I type...
I've been gaming longer than many of you have been alive.

The difference here is that this isn't a "main" MGS game

Metal Gear Solid: Rising
I'm just speculating, but it probably takes place before the events of MGS4 since Raiden is still wearing his suit, which would mean that the story intertwines with the whole MGS series. It's not a spinoff.

Hopefully, most consumers will give it the Halo Wars treatment and buy it because it has "Metal Gear" in its' name

MGR multiplat is far from a megaton. It was a good show but no mealtdowns today. Sry haters.
I'm surprised it was a different MGS game and not MGS 5 but then again I'll wait till the end of E3 just to make sure MGS5 isn't confirmed at the Sony Conference.
Its much more like a spin off and even if it isn't 360 exclusive I probably won't get it as I never really liked MGS 2 - But I'll wait till I see trailers/gameplkay before I defintly decide that

Take that argument up with Soriku about KH: Chain of Memories and Birth By Sleep. I used that same logic about how the stories intertwine with the series, but he argued me to death that they were spin offs

Would be funny if Sony got a full MGS5, but the chances of it are very slim to none. MGR is not so much of a spinoff, it's more a "not a sequel". It's not a spinoff.
