agree to disagree
I agree for the most part. Sony and Microsoft have been making efforts to make consoles more like PCs but in do so they make consoles more and more obsolete.
Nintendo is trying to make consoles unique which means that consoles have a purpose to exist.
"Pier was a chef, a gifted and respected chef who made millions selling his dishes to the residents of New York City and Boston, he even had a famous jingle playing in those cities that everyone knew by heart. He also had a restaurant in Los Angeles, but not expecting LA to have such a massive population he only used his name on that restaurant and left it to his least capable and cheapest chefs. While his New York restaurant sold kobe beef for $100 and his Boston restaurant sold lobster for $50, his LA restaurant sold cheap hotdogs for $30. Initially these hot dogs sold fairly well because residents of los angeles were starving for good food and hoped that the famous name would denote a high quality, but most were disappointed with what they ate. Seeing the success of his cheap hot dogs in LA, Pier thought "why bother giving Los Angeles quality meats when I can oversell them on cheap hotdogs forever, and since I don't care about the product anyways, why bother advertising them? So Pier continued to only sell cheap hotdogs in LA and was surprised to see that they no longer sold. Pier's conclusion? Residents of Los Angeles don't like food."
"The so-called "hardcore" gamer is a marketing brainwashed, innovation shunting, self-righteous idiot who pays videogame makers far too much money than what is delivered."
I agree. PS3 and 360 are basically PC's. The best thing about consoles are no software or hardware installations.
That just leaves the Wii as the only console.

Thanks for the mental image... D:
Pixel Art can be fun.
I remember the insults at first "Wii is not a next gen console" and even Nintendo ran with it calling themselves 'New Gen' I believe. It was just pointless attacks to insult the Wii. It came after the GC, it's next gen. End of story. But I guess one could say Wii is the only next gen console, because it took a totally new approach. And while the games for it can really be hit and miss (Waggle control) it has a lot of potential. What are the other two consoles? More of the same, but prettier looking. Though PS3 has some motion capability in the controller, but it's been largely ignored. And now 360 has a camera to help you interact with games. But since it's not the main controller like the wiimote, it'll have limited success I believe.

This.
It's probably more accurate to say that the Wii more closely resembles the previous generations of consoles, than to say the Wii is a true console and the PS3 and 360 are not. The Wii has some of like features, such as Ethernet connectivity, ability to download games instead of just being able to play straight from the distribution media, etc., while the HD twins have some features that are closer to previous consoles that pcs, such as lack of ability to add customize the box, etc.
Also, the low end 360 is cheaper than the Wii, so price can't be a factor between this two anymore.

You better own a wii and a HD console then 2 HD consoles. Seriously the ps3 and xbox360 are just the same for me.. Compare the list of exclusive games and I really think the wii wins.
I don't understand why an xbox360 can hate the ps3 and the other way around. Pretty much the same consoles except some exclusives.
I can only think of 3 good exclusives for the ps3(I'm sure there are more) and a lot more good exclusives for the wii.
Games like metroid prime 3, super smash bros brawl, super mario galaxy, mario kart wii, Punch-out!!, world of goo, zelda: the twilight princess, boom blox bash party, little kings story, super paper mario, zack&wiki,Muramasa, etc are all gems of this gen.
Ps: I'm only talking about exclusives, I know the HD consoles have better 3rd party games.
I will concede that the Wii is the only "true" console in that it's primary and ONLY focus is on games, but your points for backing it up fail.
Since my time, entry prices for consoles were between $199-$299 (at least the decent consoles, not the 3DO or Sega Saturn lol). The 360 was already there with the Arcade model. That kills the affordability point, unless the PS1, PS2, N64, Xbox, Dreamcast, etc were "unaffordable"
Accessibility: Whether by "pick up and play" you strictly mean the controller or by the games, Sony has been both. The PS controller hasn't changed in like 14 years and there are still no complaints. Don't fix what ain't broken. And with regard to games, is Halo inaccessible? CoD? Street Fighter? Burnout? The only game out right now that's an "extensive tutorial" is LBP...but the end result is infinite replayability as long as people have imaginations
Local multiplayer: Go to any sports games, fighting game, FPS, LBP (again lol), etc. and you'll find local multiplayer.....seems graphics weren't ditched for this. Where did you even come up with that?
And as far as differentiating....the Wii has Nintendo games, a few 3rd party gems, and then junk. The HD consoles may share some games with the PC (more so the 360) but they have their own exclusives (between each other, not including the PC, and then console specific exclusives too) and not to mention XBL and PSN games.
I don't see how inserting a hard drive and having firmware updates are making the consoles more and more obsolete (as some have put it). Those things make the consoles last longer.
