Forums - Gaming - "Foaming At Mouth Nintendo Hatred" (A Malstrom Article).

I disagree with this guy. First of all he doesn't seem to think Nintendo has ever done any wrong in the gaming industry. It's always us gamers that don't understand them. That's fine though, that's what fanboys are for (and he seems like a good kind that doesn't insult the other companies).

I also don't think it was the harcore that abandoned Nintendo. He doesn't say why exactly so many Nintendo gamers left for Playstation; it's because Playstation had more games that appealed to them. It was people that weren't just satisfied with Nintendo games and wanted some third-party support. Can you really blame them for "abandoning" Nintendo.

Nintendo "abandoned" the hardcore by focusing on the whole family. There's a reason the GameCube was thought of the kiddy console, and that's because Nintendo wanted it to be. I don't think they figured out how exactly to make it happen but they sure did with the Wii. They realized that the gaming market was really niche and once they appeal to the mainstream, the money will start rolling in. And it did, by the truckloads.

Nintendo "abandoned" the hardcore by making their new console SD/ED only. They tried to get a good mix of casual and hardcore games, but they needed thrid party support for that, and that's only just starting to come in. It was a business decision to try and be more mainstream with their cool new motion controls. And it worked, and they got a lot of money, and now Sony and Microsoft are trying to do the same. They needed a 'hook' to get peoples attention that they didn't have with the GameCube, and that was motion controls. As much as gamers like to think otherwise, companies exists solely to make money. Nintendo made the decision that will make them the most money, and it worked. That's why I can't blame them.

It's easy to see why some people would hate Nintendo. I had a friend who had a GameCube and loved Nintendo, so he got a Wii at launch. Bought Zelda with it and everything. But he wanted more sports games, as they were his favourite genre. Wii didn't have those at launch, so he sold his console and bought a 360. Now he's happily playing GTA and Street Fighter and all that jazz. Good for him, right? Even now, if I want to play a good basketball game, I have no choices on Wii. If I liked games like GTA and MGS and wanted good online and high definition graphics that take advantage of my new TV (because graphics DO matter) I would not be very happy with a Wii. Those kind of gamers would be much better off with an HD console and that's why I can't blame them for hating Nintendo. People who stuck with Nintendo through the N64/GameCube have every right to leave if the latest console can't keep up with the competition, and whatever they say about their former beloved company is their business.

This is the longest post I have ever written, holy crap.

He is right, of course, even though he does often drag himself down to their level. The pure hatred with which Nintendo is addressed nowadays is unconscionable, though one could argue that that episode of Invisible Walls was particularly extreme.

At least Malstrom is honest, unlike most of the Wii haters, hiding behind their sham mantle of "journalistic integrity"

noname, it´d be interesting if you read some of his articles and pointed out the parts you think he´s wrong and why....maybe it´d make for a very interesting thread, and since you´re one of the most respected and unbiased users here, a good discussion could happen...just an idea :)

Flattery will get...pretty damn far, actually.

In all seriousness, it's something I've been thinking about doing for a while. Maybe I'll give it a shot after I've updated the FAQ and WiiWare thread.

lulz....if you do it, I´ll really be looking forward to it.

Though, I imagine it´ll take a lot of time, since Malstrom´s articles are usually long.

Oh I love the comparison about Gamecube and Wii. Main criticism of the Gamecube was how it didn't do what the Wii does now. Funny thing is, no one ever gave credit to how good of a console the GC was until AFTER the Wii came out. Got to love hypocrities eh.

Pretty good write-up of once again pissing off the "justified haters" by exposing their obvious fallacies. I love it.

Malstrom has nothing on Tim. If Tim were to write an article on Nintendo he'd get a cease and desist order because his insights would be so true.

Tease.

For the people who enjoy reading Malstrom's articles (like me), they are usually pretty informative and this one here. But you guys who hate Malstrom, you hate him with some unusual passion. If you don't like him, why read his articles? It is like listening to Pachter for logical predictions--- you know you aren't going to like what you hear.

The manner in which you guys criticize him makes you no better than him. In fact, it makes you guys worse.

The GC and N64 were hardcore-centric and failed commercially compared to the PS brand. Nintendo switched to Southpaw and reaped the benefits.

Face facts. Hardcore now means blood, guns, and high-graphics, with the "best" games having 2 out of 3, or all of them. People who wanted new experiences bought a Wii, so all the casual-bashing can end right now. If the PS2 was so Hardcore, everyone who got that would've bought a PS3., but as you can see, that is not the case.

Dozens of Wii games are in the works that address these hardcore tastes, but without high-end graphics, most of these hardly-core wouldn't play them anyways, so there is no point in them concerning themselves with the Wii at all. So while the Wii abandons the hardcore, people in reality will be having fun playing it.

He has almost always some good points, I couldn't ever deny it, but he's not infallible and I really can't stand him always overemphasizing his own theories. Just to make his fans content, yes, I think he's better than Pachter, anyway.

@ Arius )

well, aiming (in TPS/FPS) feels too unresponsive to me with dual analogue pads aswell, as I'm a PC shooter player

they are pretty close(wiimote vs mouse,) mouse has a little more edge because it's more stable than a wiimote even if you anchor the wiimote somewhere to aim though, both beat the shit out of dual analog.

You were talking about laggy and unresponsive Motion controls were you not?

To be frank, IR pointing is very different from motion controls.

IR works great with RE4 or on-rail shooters or point and click adventures, but motion controls haven't worked that well in all the Wii games I own, not even the best of them. Sometimes they trigger digital events, and they are not as reliable at that as a simple button press. Sometimes they use the wiimote inclination as a substitute for an analog stick, but hardly as precise and sensitive.

Their best use to this date is in games such as Wii Sports which really work with the motions and accelerations, and of course WM+ will help.

that's more on the dev part rather than nintendo though, the tech is there for devs to use, but "do they know what they are doing?" is the real question, and that's why there have been so many horrid games with motion controls, it's new, new means mistakes, bugs, and piles of shit a lot of the times.
