Forums - Sales - Blu Ray sales are up and DVD sales are down

It's not surprising seeing how you can get a good HDTV for 1000$ these days.

My 2.5 years old 42 inch 1080p died on me a couple weeks ago and while I got it for sale at 1900$ in November 2006 while the displayed price was 2500$ I was able to replace it and get a similar model for a 1000$ last week.

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

Good job PS3!

LOL!!!!

I thought this would be due to some companies going Blu-ray only with new movies....Or am I wrong?

so SONY made 20mil???

It was a genius idea that sony put a dvd player in the PS2 so of course it's going to be a genius idea to put a blu-ray player in the PS3 (since blu-ray is going to be obviously taking over).

On a serious note however. Grabing 14% so early in the year is magnificent. Last year they were at a steady 6% (low end) to 10% (high end) until around the holidays. Year before that was 2% bluray and hd dvd. blu rays steady growth should silence some negative nancies.

It's still around 10% of overall sales, not 14%.

"BD accounted for 10.5% of total packaged-media sales revenue."

naw the 14% is going by the pie charts you can see the archives in the bluray sales thread

WalMart is a massive reason for this. Slowly they are changing around 3,500 stores so Blu-ray movies are next to the players, minus the PS3. This, as well as cheaper priced players and movies, will make it so much easier to sell.

Since joining the HDTV ranks I've found some DVD's are hit and miss on quality when upscaled on my Panny Plamsa. Older movies with poor transfers (i.e. True Lies) doesn't look so hot, but newer movies (i.e. the new Bond movies) look really good as do slightly older movies (i.e. Transporter). I'd actually be more inclined to buy (or re-buy) older movies on Blu-Ray than newer ones because of this.

Consoles Owned: Atari 2600, NES, Sega Genesis, Sega Saturn, N64, Gamecube, Wii, XBOX360

Blu Ray is pretty sweet. I just recently bought Face/Off, Terminator 2 and the Godfather Box Set to commemorate some of my favourite movies ever

Once you go Blu you dont go back lol. Alot of people are buying HDTV and people want to experience their HDTV to the fullest so of course they'd pick up Blu.

Personally, VCR tapes are good enough for me 8*>

Seriously though, this should accelerate but I don't know the high end. Right now, DVD is outselling BR somewhere between 5:1 and 9:1.

The big jump will be when (a) people's SDTVs start to die and (b) when content providers (cable companies) shift everything to digital transmission (from analog cable). That will mean new TVs and new standards being used. But whether or not that happens before there is another technological advancement in display is anyone's guess.
