It might have been like that with early 360 games (launch ones, etc) but it's definitely not like that anymore. I can't imagine anybody looking at Madden 08 for the 360 on a HD tv coming back the next day and looking at the PS2 (or even Xbox) versions of the game on the same HD tv and thinking it's the same one, the differences in the games now are dramatic. It's more just people getting used to the graphics of the 360 or PS3 than there not being a huge difference. It's like when people play a NES or SNES game and the graphics aren't as good as they remembered it they're surprised by it. |
To a certain extent I agree with you, but it is like everytime I leave a special effects movie and I hear someone say "I couldn't tell which parts were computer generated ..." which shocks me because it is obvious (and typically pretty poorly done IMO). I spent years of University in rendering classes learning about graphical effects that are only just working there way into production and that has trained me to see a lot of things people typically don't see ...
If you show people the XBox 360 and XBox version back-to-back they would tell you that the XBox 360 version looks better but couldn't tell you why they thought it did; they might say that it was more detailed but would have little concept of higher resolution textures, higher polygon count, and advanced shading techniques. If you seperated it by a day and they lost their immediate reference they wouldn't have any ability to tell the difference between the screenshots ... You might hear "I thought it looked better yesterday" but I suspect that only a handful of people would say that.
