Im sure 30gig is more than enough for a 3.5 hour movie. Ive seen a HDTV rip of TTEE in 720p and it looks awesome and thats only 8GB. When they come out in a HD box set ill be buying them and a player. |
1080p has over twice the resolution of 720p, so it would take up at least twice the space. Also, as I stated earlier, my far stems from the fact that Universal had to cut lossless audio from King Kong because it wouldn't fit on a dual-layered disc. King Kong isn't as long as the LotR: EE, so they'll either be missing lossless audio as well, or else will be split up onto two discs per film. As for tripled layered discs, the current drives used in HD DVD palyers can read any HD DVD discs with more than two layers. The same goes for all Blu-Ray players on the market. Those 200gb 8-layer discs won't see the light of day for a while, because nobody can play them. |
Universal didn't cut lossless audio on King Kong because of length. Who knows why it doesn't have lossless. Universal is kind of hit and miss on what they include lossless on and what they do not. Troy: Director's Cut is longer than King Kong and includes lossless audio. It's also been reviewed as one of the best looking discs on both Blu-Ray and HD DVD. I have both movies and can vouch to how great they look and sound.
As for the TL51 HD DVD discs. The DVD forum recently approved the preliminary final spec for this disc. Toshiba has even come out to say that all current players on the market WILL be able to play these discs.
Right now I only have HD DVD because of cost. I only have the 360 add on (running thru media center PC) at the moment but will be buying a 3rd gen standalone when they are released. I also plan on picking up a Blu-Ray player at some point when their spec is finalized and pricing gets reasonable. I don't want a PS3 as a movie player. I'm addicted to HD movies it's hard watching them on standard def DVD after seeing them in 1080p. Currently I own:
Heroes: Season 1
Planet Earth
300
Batman Begins
Blood Diamond
Last Samurai
Superman: The Movie
Superman II
Troy: Director's Cut
Unforgivin
Fast and the Furious
King Kong
Serenity
Black Snake Moan
Big Lebowski
Shooter
Also waiting on my 5 free from Toshiba. Got:
Chronicles of Riddick
Casablanca
Four Brothers
Blazing Saddles
We Were Soldiers
