Forums - Gaming Discussion - PAL PS3 Backwards Compatability Progress Update

Kwaad said: I always thought the software emulator's full power was coming with V2.0 I thought the European units were coming with V2.0 installed on them? If not, it's gonna be a update that comes out within a week.
They had better come with 2.0, and pre-installed on all machines - as 80%-90% of ALL users will never connect their console online. So no updates for them! BTW - I live in Australia, and am paying $100/m for a 40Gig, 8Mbps connection ($100AU = approx 75US). Actually, the connection goes UP TO 8Mbps - but we get closer to 4Mpbs (all depends on your distance from the exchange). They are rolling out ADSL2+ (20Mpbs) connections, but not fast enough for my liking :P (and our backbone to the US/rest of planet is still a major issue)

I promise you. It is *REALLY* reasy to find un-secure WiFi... I've yet to find a city that I cant find one. (I live in a city with 5000 people, and I know of about 20 places) I can be driveing back a *country farm road* and usually find one every 5-10 miles. Or less! PSP is your friend.
LOL Kwaad. You have to be freaking kidding me. You know 20 places that do not have secure wireless internet? Is this some sort of hobby of yours? Are you sure these aren't restraunts and the likes... Also, IF you think anyone would be willing to use this method your crazy.

Stromprophet said: Some people bugger about this, but Microsoft does theirs the same way and only has 300 titles to date with reverse compatibility. 1200 titles is good. And you can bet they probably have the most popular ones in that batch. Eventually they will have the whole thing done and then we won't have to ever worry about needing chips from the PS3 to play PS3 games when you get your PS4. They will have the whole library on software and it will lead to lower part costs.
If you don't consider God of War, MGS2, MGS3, Guitar Hero 2, Final Fantasy X-2, and who knows how many others then yes, they will have most of the popular ones in that batch.

Darc Requiem said: Jeez $150 a month? I'm only paying $40, granted I don't have a 10MB connection. I have a 6MB, but you are paying 375% as much as I'm paying. You sure you don't have the Comcast package that charges you $150 a month for phone, cable, and broadband?
03/13- 04/12 High Speed Internet 3m 48.99 Straight out of my bill. Funny thing is their website says their 3m is 19.99, 5m is 39.99 and their 10 is 59.99 EDIT: If you can find me something faster than 3m for less, please send me a link. I cant seem to find anything cheaper.

Hobby of mine? No. I was watching a news article on Knoxville, TN. They said they drove around town, with a computer logging all the WiFi nodes they saw. They found some 10,000 locations, and like 2,000 of them were not secure. Seriously dude. It's not hard. Try it... lol It's seriously funny.

My bad, $65 is the internet but I was figuring that I live in a decent size city, if someone was in a rural area they may pay more.

Harrison Talks Backward-compatibility 1,200 compatible PSone and PS2 titles at UK launch. by Rob Burman, IGN UK UK, March 14, 2007 - Sony's head of Worldwide Studios, Phil Harrison, has confirmed that European PS3s will be able to play up to 1,200 PS2 games from day one, despite changes to the way the console handles backward-compatibility - as long as you download a firmware update from the PlayStation Network. Speaking at a European demonstration of Home and LittleBigPlanet yesterday, Harrison revealed that retail units will come pre-installed with firmware version 1.5. However, the backward-compatibility enabled firmware update (1.6) is being released on launch day, March 23. Harrison also promised that Sony would keep working to ensure the number of compatible titles increases with future firmware updates. Other features scheduled for firmware 1.6 include the activation of PS3's Remote Play functions. This enables you to download media from the PS3 and watch it on a PSP or view the PS3's web browser on the handheld.

I guess you didn't read that page very closely. "Now, before you all go getting your knickers in a twist, there's a good chance that the actual units sold next week will either have an updated firmware version (1.6) installed, or at worst it will be waiting for customers when they get home." 1200 titles are supported in firmware v1.6. That machine they tested it on was not running firmware v1.6

Is the v1.6 installed on the PS3's for the Europe launch and what day does it launch over there again?

You still don't know what firmware v1.6 is going to make playable. It could come out and those games could still not work. 1200 titles is about 50% of the PS2 catalog!!! So if 11 of out the 12 games on the list worked then about 6 more should work because of the firmware update (assumptions on my part of course). Still, some GOOD games are going to not play.
