Forums - Nintendo - Koji Kondo vs. Joe Hisaishi

Two of the greatest Japanese composers of our time.  One, I'm sure you've all heard of.  His name is Koji Kondo, the mind behind most of the awesome Nintendo themes we all hold dear and know by heart.  There's the Super Mario Bros. Theme, that I'm sure you all know.  There's the Zelda theme, which still gives me goosebumps every time I hear it, and there's the countless other songs he's still cranking out.  A couple of his songs from imeem:

Zelda (Orchestral) -

Egg Galaxy - Nintendo

Then, there's Joe Hisaishi.  I'm sure not as many of you know him, but a good chunk should.  He's the man behind the music in all of the Miyzaki movies.  From Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind to Spirited Away to Howl's Moving Castle to Princess Mononoke, he did it all.  He's incredible.  Here's a few pieces of his work:

Which one's your favorite?

Honestly, despite 13 years of Nintendo, Joe Hisaishi is beyond amazing to me.  No disrespect to Koji Kondo, but Hisaishi is the better composer.

I would have to stick with Koji Kondo, not only do I think he is the best videogame composer, but one of the best composers period. I don't think anyone has made tunes as catchy as his.

Well i've seen both Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke, great movies. I don't know much about Hisaishi's work but i see his clear talent. Kondo, however, has made gem after gem. The legendary Dire Dire Docks theme was composed by this man, and until someone else composes a track that touches my soul to the extent that one track (and most of his others) has done, he will not be topped in my book.

How technical is your game?

That's exactly why I made the opposite choice, haha.  All of Hisaishi's songs (especially The Merry Go Round of Life) fill me with such emotion, so accurately depict their subject, it's breathtaking for me.

I can't answer your question, their both very good.

They're both in my collection. I suck at picking favourites, the obvious answer is: More.

Their both good. But when it comes to video game music Nobuo Uematsu is my favorite and when it comes to movie composers Ennio Moriccone is my favorite.

Koji is a god in my book Id put him on a video game Mt. Rushmore.

To get on topic...

Can't pick. I don't know Mr. Hisaishi's work well enough!

Hisaishi, the music he gives to ghibli films is amazing, better than what ive heard on nintendo games, catchy, but nothing more. On videogames Uematsu is my favorite though.
