The Ramones were punk, Blink-182 is most definitively not. Green Day, like Blink-182 is a pop band that plays pop music. the point of punk music is to not be pop music.

This argument is a waste of my time... Blink-182 is definitely not pop...

And The Ramones were punk but Blink/GD aren't/weren't?

Blink 182 were pop punk....Music progresses all the time. Especially considering how elitist punk mentality is. The Misfits can be considered punk but then other bands aren't. The Clash are viewed now as New Wave but they are considered one of the first big punk bands as well too. Blink 182 are a gateway punk band imo. I first heard about blink 182 and then I bought their Dude Ranch CD (and ended up having to buy the cd about 2-3 times because I was so addicted to it. Through Blink 182, I found out about Kung Fu Records, which introduced me to The Vandals and The Ataris. Through the Vandals, I think I discovered Nofx (who interestingly enough have a song that goes "fuck fans of blink 182, that's illegal if you're born in 83'." But I digress, music is constantly evolving and trying to justify that 1 band is punk isn't worth it because someone will always disagree on what punk means and what constitutes as punk. The only bands that seem to earn their dues aren't even together any more.

Ahhh... what a tangled web we weave... I don't think I could have said it better myself... Well, maybe I could have, but I'm far too lazy to try that... Everyone calls everyone else a sellout until they get a fucking contract... Then they realize what doing what they love for a living is... Although there are legitimate exceptions that totally deserve it...

Green Day has always been generic, they have always been poor lyrically and simple musically.

This... I have nothing else to add :|

I never liked them and probably never will :| Their old albums had arguably some originality to them... but they where still... well not bad, just generic :|

It's what all the cool kids do, the more popular music is/was, the more they hate. Whatever, Green Day is bland and poppy and have never been a technically marvelous band but they've put out some damn good songs in their time. They weren't generic, they were mainstream; a lot of people assume the two are one and the same.

Crusty VGchartz old timer who sporadically returns & posts. Let's debate nebulous shit and expand our perpectives. Or whatever.

Ugh I see very few people in here know much about Green Day anyways so why should I waste my breath. Thx, outlaw for pointing it out too me but there is not much I can do for such lost souls haha.

I personally bought 21st Century Breakdown the first day it released (huge Green Day fan) and I like it just like any. I must say it is quite a change from there other albums (even from American Idiot) but that's what makes them a good band. If I wanted to listen to the same thing I listened to on Dookie with new lyrics then that wouldn't be very fun at all.

It has an American Idiot kinda feel too it though so it does still give a sort of comfort too it. But what I really like about it, is no song is really alike at all. Although they relate in a story all have their differences. Some take a more of their older style of music while some akin to American Idiot. Some are even completely new kinda sound for them.

As a big Green Day fan (2nd favorite band ever only behind Queen) it was good to know they still know how to give their fans something refreshing every time they do an album. Queen was also good about that which is why I liked them so much.

LCEC- if you don't like the direction they are going that's cool. You don't have to like them. But I guess they still are that punk. Don't give a shit what anyone else thinks and just makes music the way they want too. As a punk fan... I got to respect that. Not to mention considering punk was based around political disposition, I must say this is quite a great punk album. Keep it up Green Day.

Do we expect an American Genius coming up soon?
