if a slim PS3 helps Sony start being profitable with the PS3...does it matter how its design looks ?

I'm sure design has some impact in attracting a consumer. I mean iPods have sold well, not only because of quality, but because of the marketing and distinct slick look of the iPods.

They didn't deny it. This is the exact response they gave before they cut the 60GB price from $600 to $500.

But still...when you use an ipod you're looking at it (most of the time) so design plays a role in the amount of enjoyemnt you will get out of the product. On the other hand, when a person is playing their PS3 they aren't looking at it, at least it wouldnt be logical for them to be, so why care about design if the only time you'll really be looking at it is when you're unboxing it?
IF there is s slim model ready to go out the door (which is presumably cheaper than the current model to manufacture)
Then Sony would introduce it immediately upon announcing it. The Price for the new slim model would be $400.
All old fat PS3's would immediately .... wait for it...... drop to $350 while you can find them in stores, as a clearance sale.
Come Christmas, if the PS3 is not selling above the 360 because of whatever reason.. maybe Microsoft will price drop in response to the introduction of the slim and increase of PS3 sales, then Sony would just drop the Slim model to $350, and boom... it seems like another price drop.
If it was me, when the slim drops it's price, (in response to any Microsoft threat) I would introduce a "Elite Slim" and maintain the $400 price point. (use your own speculation for what features would be included on that model)
That is 2 increases in sales, (probably permanently) for just $50
Sony can introduce the slim, wait for Microsoft to counter, then drop the price of the slim if they do.
It is really pretty flawless logic.
BUT with all of that being said..
There will be no slim at E3 imo.

Sony has lied so often, and been caught so often that nobody actually believes anything they actually say. I think everyone agrees that they place almost no stock in what Sony has to say about anything. With that being the case rumors and even hoaxes become the fact. The real tragedy isn't that more users are not outraged, but have come to accept being lied to as a totally acceptable business strategy. The thinking being that Sony can lie if it suits their purposes. That may be a piss poor justification for Sony, but as a consumer being manipulated there is simply no justification for defending the behavior. Other companies do not lie to their consumers. Admit it if Microsoft or Nintendo denied a slim model would we be so willing to discount a denial. The answer is no we would not, because these companies have more credibility. They do not go about lying to consumers, and even if a rumor is spot on they offer the canned response about not commenting about rumors. This is just a terribly sad commentary about this generation. That a consoles enthusiasts do not even trust the manufacturer of their console of choice. I for the sake of Sony and their customers hope that this is not another lie on their part. Sony needs to start getting some credibility, and that is not going to happen if they keep lying. That would be better for Sony and better for the customer. |
You act that this is something exclusive to Sony. This is practiced by just about every hardware manufacturer. Tech companies are always changing and evolving their products. They aren't going to alert everyone that the product on shelves now is going to be old news in 6 months.

They never said anything of the sort. All they said was:
1) They did not make the console in the picture
2) They do not comment on rumours and speculation.
How does that deny a PS3 Slim? Especially seeing as they've replied to all recent price cut rumours with "There is no price cut planned"?

I'm saying that even if sony's planning to release a PS3 Slim at E3, they wouldn't admit it until E3. It isn't unexpected or unusual for sony to deny price cuts or revisions. As a result, this information doesn't actually do anything either way. They wouldn't admit to it even if they were planning it.
So the entire thread's kind of pointless.
Wii has more 20 million sellers than PS3 has 5 million sellers.

I don't think it's that logical either, I'm just arguing against your statement that design plays absolutely no role nor has absolutely no impact on its sales. I'm sure there's some people who'll be influenced by at least some ammount by design.

Could have been a POLYStation 3, but there were some Sony labels...it's anyone's guess about Sony's commentary. They've lied before and eaten their own words before, and it's hard for people to believe them more. If you don't know what I mean, just remember Sony's "Greatest Quotes."
