What now? Call of Duty 4 got a "Game of the Year" Edition as well. Much earlier than Mass Effect at that.

Other places GOTY -

GameSpy - Call of Duty 4
Yahoo! - Super Mario Galaxy (Mass Effect wasn't even a nominee)

You know, I could go on. But this website does it very nicely for you.

http://www.gamecriticsawards.com/2007goty.html

Mass Effect got the 7th most GOTY awards. Super Mario Galaxy, Bioshock, The Orange Box, Call of Duty 4, Rock Band, and Halo 3 all got more awards.

Hold on a moment. This is done by only members from one site. This is NOT a cumilation of all awards from all website and literature. But more importantly the developers awards.

Excerpt from where your link sends us to, please read the underlined bold sections:

The judges of the Game Critics Awards are honored to announce the first annual Game of the Year awards. Considering games across all platforms, released commercially in North America between January 1, 2007 and December 31, 2007, the judges have voted to decide on the best of the best for the year.

To arrive at the top ten games of 2007, the judges applied a points system. Each judge nominated 10 games and awarded a score between 5 and 30 points to their chosen games, with a total point allotment of exactly 100. The cumulative total for each nominated game was then calculated to generate the ten highest scoring games. More details are available in the rules section.

The Game Critics Awards were set up in 2007. The judges were members of major publications and major web companies.

Regardless, my point was that Mass Effect is not recognized as the universal GOTY for 2007.

That's becuase Mass Effect only Launched on Earth..If there were an intergalatic version I think it would GOTY Universaly

Me too.:)

Just so you know Outlawaron I wasn't trying to discredit you, I didnt know if you noticed the info. :)

i agree its being hyped alot for being potentialy a good time away from being released. i how ever dont think its the best rpg this gen, why? because its more of a action/rpg than a actual rpg. also "lost odyssey" is the best rpg this gen. i will get mass effect 2 when it comes out, but i can wait till next year.

Lost Odyssey is a JRPG...not an RPG. Mass Effect is an actual RPG.

Mass Effect is a WRPG.... not an RPG. Lost Odyssey is an acutal RPG.

WRPG's are RPG's (RPG's were created in the west). JRPG's have not one ounce of RPG in them besides for the battle system.

JRPGs are RPGs. Not one ounce of Role Playing outside of a battle system. Give me a break.

JRPG's are unorthodox because they don't give you true control over the character, which is the concept of what an RPG is. In RPG's you have control over more than just a persons inventory and weapons. You have control over their actions, looks, decisions and more.

JRPG: These are forced, linear, story driven games with varying battle systems. Character (or role) development doesn't occur in JRPG's outside of changing weapons or magic. JRPG's play out like movies more so than actual RPG's. Cut-scenes are the major page turner from one aspect of the game to another in a JRPG, where as in RPG's they arent. Essentially a person could watch the movies of a JRPG and get the concept of what the whole game was all about.

WRPG: Open ended game where you are in the drivers seat of your character. You control not just their inventory, but their clothing, their attributes, their skill, their class which is more about based on that character. The character develops because of you playing the role (unlike JRPG's). You have rewards and consequences. The character is created to your liking. WRPG's are based off of original RPG's such as Dungeons and Dragons which were open ended choiced based games.

I have to agree with Staude as I am ( or used to be ) heavily into Dungeons and Dragons etc. JRPG's miss a HUGE chunk as to what an RPG is.

See, where your theory (a struggle to call it that) goes wrong, it that you're citing a broad stereotype (and only listing the cons of JRPGs and pros of WRPGs).

And I will say Role Playing doesn't mean that you necessarily have to be the center of everything. I'm more than happy to play Zidane Tribal. I don't need my created character shoe horned into the story.

You can get a basic understanding of story from the cutscenes or talking sections of any game, regardless of genre.

I can think of two upcoming fantastic JRPGs that don't fit your JRPG mold. (White Knight Chronicles and Demon's Souls)

And snuggle the girls be they short or tall,
Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,
To dance with Jak o' the Shadows."

I wasn't struggling at all. I state not the pros and cons of JRPG's and WRPG's, but what they are made up of. You'll actually see that I am quite correct.

Role playing means.... you are playing a role, plain and simple. Actors are role players. Role playing games are open ended games where you affect that world by your actions.

I've never seen any video of White Knight Chronicles or Demon Souls. Does the game have character development? or is it just the same as all the others?

This thread has only served to increase Mass Effect 2 hype!

Playing: Borderlands(great co-op,HUGE amount of content),Too Human(better late than never lol),Saints Row 3(Penetrator ftw),Minecraft 360,Harry Potter Lego.

Patiently waiting for:  Tomb Raider, Borderlands 2

I just watched a video of White Knight Chronicles, and there is a repetitive combo that you do in the game, which is quite annoying. The knight actually looks pretty cool though.
