Forums - Gaming - SDXC...its future in gaming?

Nintendo displayed alot of vision and patience in implementing the SDHC technology into the Wii, and new stand to reap the benefits of doing so.  Given the higher of the standard, it is feasible to have Wii games on these cards.  This brings me to this article I just read about SDXC…

http://www.pctoday.com/editorial/article.asp?article=articles%2F2009%2Ft0705%2F18t05%2F18t05%2Easp&articleid=55435&guid=8FB6E2BB6BD14628A212826454FB0AE0&searchtype=0&WordList=SDXC&bJumpTo=True

This technology is HUGE (literally and figuratively), since in 2 years, it will help drive the cost of SDHC down to a low cost.  I’ve been of the belief that SSD will be ready to replace HDD by the next console generation, but many have doubted that.  It might be even possible to make a cheaper, one-time burn SDHC to storage games onto….but time will tell.  Anyway, here’s some more information on the tech:

Carts return the world of videogames. The trick will be costs. 1TB should be enough for next generation.

Well this SDXC is coming out at about the right time based on exponetial rate that the SD design has been doing. I do agree that many especially firm supporters of HD Disc technology would prefer to deny this as a fact.

Is this the future of our games. That's a resounding yes. The real question is comes down to time though. That will depend on the next generation release. If as many are saying that this generation will be the longest. Then there is a good chance that the SDHC 32gb will be the base design. The SDHC for future games offers so much oppertunity by the next generation. A Write Once Read Many SDHC will be cheaper to produce than a HD disc. There are no moving parts in the device and over all cheaper to add to the machine.

If the generation comes on the normal time. Then we can expect one more disc based gen.

Squilliam: On Vgcharts its a commonly accepted practice to twist the bounds of plausibility in order to support your argument or agenda so I think its pretty cool that this gives me the precedent to say whatever I damn well please.

Yes, spinning disc, your days are numbered. We had some good times, even back in the days when you twirled magnetized plastic around like a cheap floozy. But I won't miss your spin up times, your friction, or your burned out ol' motors.

I'll miss your lasers, though. Lasers are kickass.

yea i like the idea of flash memory which in theory and i think in practice increases reliability, and it can even make game systems smaller which in turn will use less power and make less noise. yes i like it.

Yeah, the next iteration of home consoles should be going back to cartridges.
I never really like disc base. Your game is gone with a small scratch.

Too small = will be lost easily. CF card size is more ideal but some would complain about the bendable pins.

SDXC has a theoretical limit of 2TB but will begin at 64GB so it still a long way to go. There is also the price. I doubt you can produce these card as cheaply as optical discs.

For B/C, I can see M$ keeping the DVD player, but all new games would come on a SD card, but the problem is cost,...given the volume we are talking about, chances are that will drop the cost of the SD card tech.

I don't think B/C will be a factor in next-gen consoles, but I could be wrong.

I think B/C will be important in the first 6-8 months of the next console iteration...because this generation is going to be going strong into the next.  If M$ does, wwhat it does best, and make's it seamless for developers to program for nexbox, similiar to 360, its going to reduce risk.
