I finally got my hands on CTYD (no, I would not have touched it if reviews and impressions had noted major performance and gameplay flaws, like some of the Data Design games, but not even the negative reviews noted that), so I got it and am enjoying it (it's not perfect, the C button could just as easily have been the context sensitive button, but it's still fun). The Conduit is next on my Wii list.
But in the time of the game's release, and now, I haven't seen any comparisons to RE4, despite how often it's commented on how the graphics look. If there is, someone point me to it. But either way, I'm going to do my own.
Shot for shot comparisons obviously can't be done (but gametrailers lost a lot of respect from me for not at least trying with DR1 and CTYD), so I'll compare similar things when I can.
I'll compare Leon and Frank in similar stances, walls by getting up close to them, floors, and objects. There will be regular shots, zoomed in shots with the rifles (I've determined that rifles in CTYD zoom in as much as RE4 rifles without the scopes), and even some cropping and zooming. This will be to compare texture resolutions and detail.
Also, I'll compare some of the larger areas of RE4 to some of the larger areas in CTYD, to compare the scale. That will take a lot of pictures, as I'll try to cover every room and corridor.
IMPORTANT: I would like to save the pictures here, but if that's too much, I'll put them on a flickr account. Please let me know.
But to ensure that the comparison is as fair as possible, these are the parameters I've determined (some I'll figure out later, but I'll note those).
- Screens from RE4 will be from the GC version, so as to switch between more easily. But if screencaps aren't the same size, I'll switch to the Wii version.
- My video capture device has only composite or S-Video input. I only have an S-Video cable for the GC, so composite is it. The quality won't be the best, but both games will get the same drop. If anyone else can do this with component cables, be my guest.
- Screencaps will be at default lighting in the game, and default settings on the device. This will likely be too dark for some monitors, so pictures will be touched up with brightness and contrast. The degree will be the same for all pictures, and once I start taking them, I will note the degrees.
- Pictures will be saved as jpegs, at 90% quality.
- Screens from both were saved at 720x480. But that left a lot of black space, so I cropped the pictures to 680x400, leaving just enough black space to make it clear none of the actual game images are cropped off.
- Pictures posted here are actually shrunken forms of the full-sized pictures, which will be linked to below the posted ones.
If any of you can think of other parameters for this comparison, please suggest them.
A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.
