Forums - Gaming - Why is everyone so fascinated with old games?

Definitely a sign of getting older if u look back at retro games. I couldn't imagin beeing 18 and playing 1942, or Black Tiger (now, there is a great game that needs to come back) and loving it.

We're talking about the variety of characters. Now the majority of characters are humans. I'm a human, so I think that's boring. I want more games where I can be wacky crazy stuff.

Games aren't made by geniuses like these anymore:

I never stopped playing my favorite games.  There was no phase of being too hip and cool for the boring old crap and then getting older and turning retro.  I've always been finding new games to enjoy, and some are old and some are new.

At any given point there are more good old games than good new games, just because... the majority of games are old.

I replay old RPGs for the same reason I re-read my sci-fi/fantasy books every couple years. I get to re-experience it mostly as if I had never played the game before. I don't do nostalgia so that issue doesn't work for me.

The average game 10-15 years ago was better than a triple AAA title today.

Arent we at the next gen of games, shouldnt we be hyped about that and not about getting an older game that you once owned and got rid of it for a newer console aka ps2? when you were playing ps2 or x box were you thinking about them than?if not than why now?Do you actually play them or have the time to with all the new and upcoming releases? or are you saying to the developers that you'd rather play a older game than the games they are releasing these day?

To be honest there arent that many great titles on the market, there are only about a handful that really bring out these next gen consoles.

what is your take on it?

There are old games that have play mechanics we don't get today.  That is the appeal of retro actually.  In regards to a backwards compatibility side of things, it enables one to keep their PS2 games, and get rid of their PS2.

On the play mechanics, etc... comment, take Pirates on the XBox, for example.  There are no games like Pirates available this generation.  There are some game with pirates, but it isn't the same as Pirates by Sid Meiers.

@Rubang:

That video just made my week. Thanks for posting it.

Quem disse que a boca é tua?

Qual é, Dadinho...?

Dadinho é o caralho! Meu nome agora é Zé Pequeno!

I think for the most part its all about nostalgia... The newer games win hands down just because they are NEW. I would put the story lines of MGS4, Mass Effect, ToV or Valk Chronicles against any of the old games. Even if you dont like these games listed the stories are very indepth and I think incredible.

The older games do not have a soul or were some magical incredible game! No they were just fun when growing up. All the stuff you were seeing was fresh and new to you. At some point most new games stop being fresh and new and just bottled up in a different presentation.

Ms Pacman is always ranked high as top video games of all time. Most people that havent played it before wouldn’t spend hours playing it now… Just like IMO most new gamers or up and coming gamers will probably turn their nose up to games like FFVII. I loved that game but when I went back to play it there had been so many clones of the game that I was bored replaying it.

Now some games do stand up to time... I still like playing FF Tactics because I like a hard strategy game but I would rather have something new.

Good games never get old.

Good game CONCEPTS don't get old.  However, a game that was good at one time, can get stale now.  Sometimes it is useful to slap a new coat of paint on a game.  Like Kaboom now is dated, but was real good on the 2600.  I would say Warlords, however, has held up better.

I think also of Lode Runner.  The latest update refreshes the game.
