It'll still do amazing. Sims is one of the biggest franchises on PC. Not as big as World of Warcraft but still HUGE
According to Wikipedia, Sims 1 has 16 million shipped, Sims 2 13 million and WoW 11.5 million. That's without counting the expansion packs.
Sims is the best selling PC game. I expect Sims 3 to have very good sales, in fact more than Sims 2.
Axumblade beat me to it, lol.
I agree that there's a lot more to do, in Sims 2 community lots were useless because it took a huge time to go to them, now it's a breeze, you just put a bicycle and you can go everywhere quickly. Relations seem a lot harder to make (in fact, all the game seems a bit harder than before), I need to get a hang of them.
And there's always those strange things in the game, for example, I made my sim do jogging across town, looks like his hygiene went very low, and he was far from house, so he entered another house (where his son was visiting) went straight for the bath and took a shower there!
But overall I'm liking it, it's like a much more complex Sims 2

this sums up my thoughts exactly =)
and really..the fastest speed isn't enough by a very long shot.
I had asomething funny happen when i started playing.
The first night my house got robbed. As usual the robber goes straight for my toilet and sink, knowing i don't have enough simoleans to replace them (jerk!). My dude gets up, calls the cops. Hilariously, the burglar made it to the sidewalk when the cop car arrived. The cop walked straight past the burglar who was right there tell me that he way sorry that the burglar got away. The whole time the cop was there, the burglar was standing still on my sidewalk.

Actually you are both wrong on your WoW number. There is 11.5 million ACTIVE subscribers. That mean people who are actually pay for it currently. THat doesn't count people who have quit or have never started up the game. Considering how many people have also quit I'm willng to be the actual sold number is nearer to 15-18 million.

can someone tell me how i know what requirements are needed to get a job promotion? They aren't clearly labeled like they were in the previous games

In the job tab it's what you need, the faces show how good you're doing, you need "mood", some skill (the game tells you which) and maybe a good relationship with your boss/coworkers. If there's one skill you need training (Athletics, Gardening and so on), when you gain your first point of that skill it'll appear in the skills tab, and you'll see exactly how many levels you need for it
It's much harder to get promoted this time, specially because in Sims2 you leveled up the skills to the point needed, sent the sim in a good mood to work and you got a promotion, here it takes much more time and effort. Though it's nice you get paid per hour, so you may work extra hours in some chances and also get a permanent wage rise even though you don't get promoted
