I'm jonesing for some civ (haven't played a civ game since civ 2 but my god did I play the hell out of that), and I just noticed that civ 4 is only 18 bucks on steam. But the complete edition is on sale for 35 with all the expansions. Are the expansions really good, worth it, add anything significant or would I be just fine with the regular civ 4? Anybody have experience?

Get the complete edition. Colonies is an entire game on its own, and both expansions add a good deal of content to the game (though I'd suggest playing plain Civ 4 a couple times before installing).

You should also try the excellent user made mod Fall From Heaven, a fantasy setting, a really, really well made one!

Yes Beyond the Sword made Civ4 a much more awesome game, I didn't enjoy Colonies as much as I hoped but that's probably because its not a whole Civ experience (from the beginning of civilization to well in to the future, etc.) but it was a fun game as well.
