What is it with Developers saying that a game they are creating can’t run on a competing console? Usually they ramble on about the processor, chip or some other hardware that “let’s us take advantage of such-and-such feature”. This is just another cheap way to market your game without spending advertising dollars while giving people something to read about your game…while creating a buzz about it.

Lately we’ve seen this said with Killzone 2, Heavy Rain and Infamous, so allow me to take a few quotes said about both of these games and let’s see if we can’t find a trend here, aside from the fact that they are all PlayStation 3 exclusive titles.

Guerrila on Killzone 2:

  • “We are taking huge advantage of the architecture of PS3. I firmly believe that what we’ve shown we can get out of that machine would be difficult, if not impossible, to deliver on a competing machine.”
  • [Producer Steven Ter Heide on Killzone 2 being multiplatform] - “I would say [It's] impossible. We literally can’t do this stuff on any machine other than the PS3.”
  • “To make it simple, the Xbox 360 doesn’t have SixAxis or Blu-ray. PlayStation 3 does. And for us that’s a really big thing. The level you’ve just seen is 2GB. We really need Blu-ray to make the game. I don’t know how you could fit it on Xbox 360 without taking some shortcuts.”

Heavy Rain director David Cage:

  • “I think this game can only be done on PlayStation 3″ - “”We used all the SPUs”
  • “I think to do the visuals, and all the stuff we’re doing would be too difficult [on the 360]. There are amazing physics there, and stuff with crowds that you just couldn’t really get.”

Sucker Punch Employee’s regarding inFamous:

  • “PS3 is really the only place we could have made this”
  • “The most important aspect, for us is the Cell processor” - “It’s the mind boggling number of calculations that are going into how to get everybody’s feet and body lean into place” - “it’s doing visibility, it’s doing a whole bunch of our skinning and animation code, it’s doing particle system” - “all of this stuff has been crafted and created to run specifically on the cell processors”
  • “there’s layers and layers of animation” - “it’s something that the PS3 and our engine really allows us to take advantage of”
  • “when we were making the game for PS3, we’re constantly amazed at how much the technology allows us to add a lot more”

Three companies that dont have 360 dev kits so how would they know? The only 1up ps3 has over 360 is the blu ray capacity, but thats also a downside cause its more expensive to develop for,but other then blu ray I'd say 360 can do anything PS3 can graphically.

Some of the qoutes are correct. The game engine as is won't run on 360. Even if you modified the CPU code to the 360 that is. However the matter is that that's because the PS3 graphics chip is inferior. So the PS3 requires more CPU/SPU power to make up for it's short comings. So porting it over means that much of the graphics overload would still be running on the 360 CPU which can't handle it. However a properly designed game that takes advantage of the better graphics chip instead of putting the extra load on the CPU/SPU.

I'm not refering to so much GPU mhz, ram or bus, I'm refering more to that the Sony is using a graphical design closer to OpenGL(last I heard) while the 360 is using DirectX10. While I like OpenGL and use it myself I can't deny that now DX is just better for graphic gpu techniques.

The comments are true to an extent, but it's not the whole story. The 360 can do a far better treatment of a graphical object than the PS3 can ever do, what the PS3 can do better is support more higher grade textures and smoothly handle more objects.

very good, but 360 is using directx 9

It is old, this statement is blown around all over the place.

When I see statements like that, I don't think 'Oh how impressive a game that requires a lot of performance to run' I think 'So, all the game has to rely on to impress me is visuals?'

I think something similiar.  Really I just think... "Wow this developer has his priorities all wrong."

The one i love is that Disgaea 3 can't run on a PS2.

well PS3 can't run ps2 games -> ps2 is more powerfull than PS3 confirmed XD
i mean seriously this is getting more and more ridiculous - every exclusive game released by sony is "only possible on ps3" so i guess we can say about 360 exclusive games that they are only possible on 360 right(never knew those 2d casino games use so much processing)? same goes to wii/ds/psp and so on.

Does every Sony developer need to say it to feel better or somethin? is it working the same way as it is with cars and penis? the more they say it's only possible on ps3 the more they will feel better?

360 chip has 6 threads

Ps3 has 7 spu plus a ppe that runs the spu

360 has higher powered gpu

rsx must have several spu do preprocessing for it to match 360 gpu

It all seems to equal out

Repent or be destroyed

"WHOA WHOA WHOA SLOW DOWN! A Sony developer said something isn't possible on the 360?

Well then it must be true. No doubt about it. Forget the fact that he has never worked on the 360 or ported the game to the 360 and is bias to the PS3(no duh), if he says it then its true, just like Lord of the Rings is based on a true story and Terrorists don't use bombs, they use the can-can dance."

The 360 has not come anywhere near KZ2 in terms of graphics and physics, therefore Killzone 2 can not be replicated on the 360 to the same standard it is on the PS3.

The 360 isn't at the start of its life either, so it isn't as though we'll see massive graphical jumps in games.

Killzone 2 barely came out a few months ago. Eventually the 360 will have some games that surpass it visually. And eventually a PS3 game will surpass that.

Frankly I don't care what the PS3 does in regards to graphics. I would be most impressed if the PS3 actually generated a profit.
