Forums - Sales - Something to remember when predicting all these holiday million sellers

So now that we have some daily threads comparing the sales of Game A vs Game B on whatever system. It's important to realize that not every title is going to sell the amount it should. The fact that so many titles whether multiplat or exclusive get released in the same 8-12 week period can be damaging for some games.

We've seen it last holiday with CoD cutting the wings from R2 because CoD is the more popular name. Games like Tomb Raider, Little Big Planet, or Prince of Persia all had good sales out of the gate, but not great. We say the economic recession effects how many consoles are sold but the same works with software and $59.99 game(s) Some people don't have enough funds to buy 6,7 or 8 games in 2 months.

If companies are not carefull when selecting the release dates of there games, it could have some negative effects. We all assume Splinter Cell, Assassins Creed, Heavy Rain, Uncharted 2 will sell big time. But what if Heavy Rain and Assassins Creed are released on the same day. If the reviews are good for AC, then the new ip of Heavy Rain will not move units. The same goes for MAG if it's released anywhere near MW2.

Some games win or lose in the holiday season, some great ones at that. So my point is, when your predicting your sales expectations for your loved ips. Pay attention to the release date and the game along side it. Because once we know what game is coming and when, you might be making some changes to your predictions.

Cheers!

I don't buy that.

IF GTA5 were releasing same day as Uncharted 2 id by UC2 for sure maybe GTA5 just casue the franchise is bigger does not mean the other lacks a loyal fanbase.

Also half the time i buy more then one game its just easier then running to the store every 2 weeks for a new game.

Thats why i love the holidays, i got once and buy 4/5 games.

Why would you put LittleBigPlanet in the same category as PoP and TRU?

LBP: 2.22 million

PoP PS3: 0.78 million
PoP TOTAL: 1.52 million

TRU PS3: 0.86 million
TRU TOTAL: 1.59 million

Incidentally, both of those games sold better on PS3 than 360.

I put LBP in the same category as the others not because i felt it's sales were bad, but it didn't sell as much as people predicted. But to be fair to the game, it did have a messed up launch so that would also play a factor in it.

How many (sane) people predicted that it would be at 2.22 million six months after its release?
