Forums - Sales - Sony did with PS3 what history told it not to do.

This, Sony messed up with the PS3 stuff is getting old. Sony did not mess up. They did not care more about Blu-ray than video games. They simlpy made the best console possible at the time, charged an extreamly fair price, and the consumers failed from there. Now I will not completly lay the blame on the public, because I know Sony messed up in one area. The marketing of the PS3 has been down right pathetic. Sony, nor Microsoft for that matter, have done anything to show that these are no longer GAMES machines. PS3, and 360, are Home Entertainment Computers. They reach way beyoind what a simple games machine has ever done, and to think you should be able to pick one up at games machine prices is absurd.

Now I know I am going to get the morons out there that say, "well I just want a games machine". WTF is the matter with you. Why do you want to allow these corperations to continue to rape you when they are giving you optioppns that are extremly fair? I can not begin to discrbe how stupid people look when they have, a Blu-ray Player, a Wii, a 360, and a cable box all hooked up to there TV, when you can get the fuctionality of all of them in one box for much less. Or the people I seee that have a Cell phone, an MP3 player, a DS, and a GPS system, when there is a device on the market that does all of those thing, and for the most part it does them better.

Pathetic.

The lengths some people will go...

N64 was more powerful then PS1. PS1 won.

Xbox was more powerful then PS2. PS2 won.

History has shown that the most powerful tech doesnt win because it usually leads to a higher price point. Sony was smart to make decent but not the best tech so it was mass market friendly and not as costly as optimizing for the more powerful consoles.

Now Sony seemingly spits in histories face with PS3. They make the most powerful tech and therefore have the highest asking price. To make it worse they came out a year after 360. I dont understand why Sony didnt stick to their winning formula.

My guess they thought the Bluray war was more important then video game market share, I dont know......

By your logic the Wii has this gen in the bag...Good to know

I think by everyone's logic, the Wii has this gen in the bag. (and for about a year now too)

@ Majin

I'm interested to see what he has to possibly back that up.

As am I. Though my guess is he'll just stop replying.

And it looks like you're right.

What alot of people don't realise is a company is only interested in one thing - profit!

Sony's PS3 outing has been nothing short of a disaster, yes it could win the mainstream

praise of its fans etc.. but let's be honest, it took the PS1 appox 6-7 years before it actually

started to make a profit, I think the PS2 was even longer.

Sony are taking a HUGE hit on selling each PS3, their profits from the Playstation brand at one

point accounted for 51% of ALL sony profits (think of how many different products sony

make).

Now to fall from grace at such a height was utter complacency, they took a gamble with blu-ray

and quite frankly lost big time when it comes to revenue.

Yes some might say Nintendo lost the last gen race but financially they didn't. From memory I

read that they sold approx 35 mil Gamecubes. remember nintendo are masters at production and

if anyone here has ever owned one of their systems, they are built to last. More importantly, every

system they sell makes a profit.

So in that sense, if nintendo made enormous profits in the last generation and presuming PS2 made

great strides too (and looking at the numbers, still outselling PS3 in some territories)  what does that tell us?

Did people stand by the Playstation brand this time even though they were winning the mainstream

generation last time ? No

This time it came down to price. You drop the blu-ray player and it becomes 200 dollars cheaper at launch.

Still expensive but affordable.

Reuters worked out that each wii sold makes nintendo $6 profit (now that was from launch) that may have gone up,

due to cheaper electronic parts and advancing technologies pushing prices down.

Sony and M$ must be taking an awful hit on their console, does anyone have any real figures? must be $50-75

at least for PS3, I presume the 360 is less.

So even if the PS3 does catch up with the 360 or Wii in peoples hearts, its going to take a decade to break even

financially and even longer for the company to forget it's mistakes.

They sold about 22 million GameCubes.

sony was arrogant that was all. if it was launched at 299 and before the xbox360 it would have won easily. yes 599 for a console that was worth $800 at launch was a "good deal" but sony underestimated the power of the playstation brand. if they couldn't have launched before the xbox 360 they would have made more money if they just focused on their ps2 and maybe added an add-on with the expansion bay. by not making the ps3 they would have won this generation due to the fact that microsoft would still be in huge debts.

I thought it was alot more than that, any other sources apart from wikipedia? ;)

Sure, 'master' ioi himself ;)

PS3 is only 2 years on the market. Well, actually 2,5.
PS3 launched at 599$.

IF it would have launch price like 399$, and by now 299$, PS3 wouldn`t have problems with outselling x360 or selling on par with Wii.

After 2,5 years we have AMAZING looking games on PS3 like:

Uncharted
Motorstorm:PR
Killzone 2
LittleBigPlanet
inFAMOUS
Gran Turismo 5P
Naruto: UNS
Ratchet & Clank
Valkyria Chronicles
Metal Gear Solid 4

And incoming:

Uncharted 2
God Of War 3
Heavy Rain
Final Fantasy XIII
Ratchet & Clank:CiT

All THIS thnx to more powerful CPU and GPU.

More important thing, PS3 is only 2,5 years on the market, THIS GEN still has like 3-4 years to go.
And with having so MANY engines created, just imagine how many games will come to PS3 in next 2x 2 years(i mean every 2 years(atleast) a game on same improved engine).
Now, it`s only a matter of time, when PS3 gets a 299$ price, after that, there will be nothing left to hate or troll on PS3. =)
PS3 FTW!
