Forums - Sony - IGN: Is Metal Gear Solid Overrated?

MGS wasnt an amazing game only because of its story.... the game was just done beutifly.... the game play was amazing... the boss fights were some of the best ever..... the replayability, because it actually gave an insentive to... it was a graphic powerhouse for its time.... how is it overated again?

Its waaaaayyyyyy overrated. Its only fun if your a fan of the series. Otherwise its pointless. Its an okay movie...err...game.

If anything the fans of the series should dislike it more than anyone else. If you know your MGS story from previous games then MGS4 was an inconsistant mess, either ignoring major things, getting time of events to influence actions wrong and just revealing plot that has no reason that it should of happened, just for the sake of it. Unless it retconned them, which still makes a bad story.

Well, sir, you didn't play the game at all.

What kind of weak hollow argument is that?

Seriously, I'm at college right now, but if you seriously want me to advance a few ideas while I have some time:

What did Kojima ignore from the other games? As far as I know AND having played all the Metal Gear games before playing Metal Gear Solid 4, everything links together. Sure, some can argue that some key ideas were brought too fast in order to advance the story (talking about how Snake meets Big Mama, I mean... it was that easy?), but it doesn't change the fact that I wasn't lost at all. I made sure to analyze every single detail that Kojima would have missed, and I swear, I stroke everything I listed in my list. He even went as far as the original Metal Gear to explain everything, and it seriously surprised me that he did not forget about all of it. I wonder if I still have that paper actually... Call me a hardcore fan, I really don't see what you're complaining about here.

There is maybe one mystery that still remains though: Sunny. Sure, we know she is Olga's daughter, but I feel that she should have been developed more because she looked like an interesting character.

My conclusion (for now) is that Metal Gear Solid 4 was made for the true fans that wanted to see the conclusion to Snake's story, but at the same time Kojima had to encourage non-fans from not closing the game because of a lack of action in the story. Seriously, it would have been boring if he didn't make many people die in the game and other events like Snake meeting Ocelot in a random place in that city (can't remember the name). I believe it was a necessity to do so in order to advance the story.

Random game thought :
Why is Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 getting so much hate? We finally get a real game and they're not even satisfied... I'm starting to hate the gaming community so f****** much...

"Or, you could sum it all up like IGN Features Editor, Ryan Geddes: "Saying Metal Gear Solid is overrated is like playing the Wii. Don't do it unless you want to look stupid." "

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL

I would say the "look stupid" is equivalent to someone wacking a hornet's nest and unleashing a swarm of hornets on themselves.  If you say the game is "overrated" you will end up unleashing a swarm of Metal Gear fanboys who insist if you don't get it, or think it is the "best game ever", then you are stupid or worse.  If you pick at the game, then you are called a hater, and it goes downhill.  So, it is smart to just enshrine the game as "Best game EVA!" so they don't get furious.  There, MGS4 is the BEST GAME EVA!  I see the light.  It is better than Civilization, Grim Fandango, Operational Art of War, Super Mario Galaxy, Tetris, Puzzle Quest, Gran Turismo, and every other possible game I can name.  And at this point, the entire conversation takes a nosedive into stupid (I know people would argue most my posts do), so Ryan is right.  You can't dare question MSG4, because you end up looking stupid.

Kojima himself had said in past interviews that he makes games not only to entertain, but primarily to teach and educate. He called the philosophical lectures the backbone of his games and what he is trying to create.

I don't think Kojima should have to compromise his idea's for a wider audience. Maybe the audience needs to do more research and avoid his games if they don't like what he is doing. Arguably, as an artist it is not his responsibility to cater to all gamers but rather it is the gamers responsibility to choose the type of games they like rather than complain because of their lack of research.

Talk about pompus.  This has the stench of being full of oneself.  I get the same vibe as I do from Rush Limbaugh saying the GOP need to go out into American and lecture it of the ways of Conservatism and the Republicans being right (and not do a listening tour).

I guess what Kojima is trying to teach me is a mythical economy based on war is bad.  I will have to keep that in mind.

Economy on war is bad.  It is the primary cause of the recession right now.  Kojima was trying to prevent this from happening by teaching gamers this stuff.

The economy was run by people fighting wars and crashed for that reason?  It didn't crash because individuals faultly labelled high risk investments as sound and divided it up a million different ways, and then people leveraged to the hilt on it?  Care to show me where the economy currently is one that is based upon building war machines and having them blow themselves up.  Show me where this trend is happening anywhere in history at this moment.  I don't see it at all.  Curious who else does.

Is it, like FF was a long time ago. "after VIII"

Guess Japanese made games are too complicated for 360 fanboys to understand.

Guess Japanese made games render weeaboos unable to discern the difference between complicated and contrived.
