Forums - General - Looks like GM will file bankruptcy.

Umm.. yea...

So, this means a few things. One, thousands of people are going to lose there jobs over the next few months, and the billions the government gave them will never be seen again.

This is what pisses me off about bailouts. It was pointless. They should have just let them file Chapter 11 in the first place, and saved the tax payers money.

I agree with you on this one.

though the government was going to spend money one way or another; whether it be keeping those people employed, or paying them unemployment for an extra month

Good riddance to a bad car maker.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

Just let general motors fail. If you can't make it then tough sh!t.

Here's an idea for them to make money. Build cars that people outside of USA actually want.

The bail out was the worst idea ever, I dont even want to get started.

I currently reside under the London Bridge.

Does anyone know what I did with my hat?

Saturn's aren't that bad dude. I find them very reliable :)

This what happens when people buy fucking Toyota's and Honda's.

This is what happens the those Toyotas and Hondas are built better than GM cars and when they don't have to deal with the stupid automaker union.

I don't mind unions general but the UAW has to take the cake in greediness.

Actually, Consumer Reports which is highly more reliable with data collection and testing than one person's opinion ranks Saturn the second worst in reliability by brand (it only beats out Land Rover).  GM overall as a company ranks second worst in reliability (overall score of 57) only ahead of Chrysler (overall score of 48).  So GM reliability sucks and most of their cars suck.  Honda (overall score of 78), Subaru (overall score of 75), and Toyota (overall score of 74) are the top three.  Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Volkwagen, BMW, Hyundai follow with scores in the 70-73 range.

Interestingly enough, GM, like most US automakers, were doing very well outside of the US. The major problem was that they were doing horrible in the states, and their overseas gains weren't enough to offset their poor performances here.

I do wonder what this will mean for Ford ...

The bailout and bankrupcy of GM and Dodge will translate into some dilike of their brands from their current consumer base, will dramatically weaken the Union with its membership (you wouldn't feel happy if you paid expensive union dues for years, a large portion of your co-workers were laid off, and you had to take a 25% or more reduction in wages and benefits) and there are several areas of the car market where Ford is competitive and most European and Asian car makers are not (for example inexpensive trucks).

5 years from now Ford could be selling far more cars, at a higher margin with more reasonable costs.
