Got anything to back up that 95-97%?

@Solid_Raiden

The majority of those games could be MGS4, that doesn't change the fact that the number is not just for MGS4.

Games that I think are included in the number:

Metal Gear Solid Touch - it was launched in March, so it should be covered there.

Metal Gear Online

Metal Gear Solid Mobile

Metal Gear Online sold 3k in Japan, which is the only region it was released in disc form.

They didn't ship any copies of MGS Touch or MGS Mobile.

And I did estimate MGS4's shipments. 95% of the sales would be 4.5 million.

Well, that estimation isn't based on anything. The only information that gives any kind of idea about the breakdown is in Konami's presentation material for the end of Q1 fiscal year 2008. Here they mentioned Metal Geat Solid shipping over 3 million copies when the complete shipment for the Metal Gear series was 3.94 million.

This to me is an indication there was still a significant amount of other games within that total shipment number. Because I don't see any reason for Konami to say over 3 million if in fact it is only just shy of 4 million. They would simply be downplaying the performance of their own game towards their shareholders, which doesn't make any sense.

That's a very good point. Looking at these figures from their Q1 results we can assume that around 700.000 MGS-games were shipped within Q1 that were not MGS4. Right? This 700.000 number is a guess of course, but it looks probable. In that case, even if they ONLY shipped MGS4-copies for the rest of the fiscal year, that would mean that MGS4 shipments will be around 4 million then.

I'm not bashing MGS4 here, in fact i think 4 million is not bad at all, but i just hate it when people are not looking at the facts. I mean come on, almost every major gaming website wrote a story about MGS4 shipping 4.75 million copies. It's just not true. With that in mind i really can't blame a lot of readers(clearly also a lot of members from VGChartz) for believing it.

Because when Konami announced over 4 million shipped for MGS4, the total Metal Gear sales were 4.33 million. So the difrrence is just around 250k because others version of MGS are almost dead.

I'm pretty sure NPD (and consequently) VGchartz, didn't track the 250k HW bundles of MGS4, so there you go, the difference between shipped & sold becomes more tangible.

I think the mix up is most likely with online sales on sites like Amazon. From what I have been hearing, their numbers are always screwed.

I do think MGS4 isn't the only game included in the data. Yet it most likely is a sizable chunk, no doubt.

MGS4 shipped around 4.4
MGS4 sold around 4.2

Do you have a source for that 4 million shipped? Because I can't find it in their presentation material when they released that 4.33 million figure nor in any news item at Konami's site.

Alright... it's time to shout!

Here is the sales data from VGC for the METAL GEAR FRANCHISE for the year ending 31st March 2009 (actually ending 3rd April, but it will tie in)

This may give us some indication as to what could have been shipped OTHER than MGS4.

-----

MGS4 (PS3) - 3,894,844

MGS Essential collection (PS2) - 153,049
(Americas data only)

MGS3: Snake Eater (PS2) - 62,280

MGS3: Subsistance (PS2) - 23,246 (Japan and America only)

MGS:PO plus (PSP) - 147,118 (Japan and America only)

MGS:PO (PSP) - 31,243 (Japan and America only)

MG Acid 2 (PSP) - 11,020 (Japan and America only)

MG Acid (PSP) - (couldn't be bothered as it sold very little

As you can see, even with a good deal of missing Others region data... there are significant sales to some games..... The ones I highlighted in blue I am sure there have been sufficient sales to warrant an extra shipment... while the ones in bold I am uncertain of, or will depend on what they sold in "others"

With only the American data to go on, the Essential Collection for the PS2 will have needed a decent sized shipment after the first one. If we estimate PAL sales to be similar or a little higher than American sales (which they seem to be with most MGS games) and Japan sales at about 30-50% of them, then the Essential Collection probably sold about 400,000 units in that year..... not all of those will have been shipped in the year of course, as I believe shipments of games like that probably go in bulk, but given the timing of the release, probably ~300k were shipped during the year.

MGS Portable Plus is the second highest game, missing PAL data, it probably sold over 200k during the year, depending on Konamis shipment schedules, it could have needed anything from 50k - 150k shipped in the year.

The black bolded titles I am unsure of their need to ship anything, but they could account for something.... so 0-75k for them combined.

-------

So shipments of non MGS4 games could easily account for 450k of that 4.75 million.... that leaves 4.3 million for MGS4, and VGC stated it sold 3.9 million.... it's not a huge discrepancy, and it could be smaller.

The Essiential Collection is the only notable that would have gotten any decent number of shipments. PO Plus would have also gotten a decent amount as well.

We know that MGS4 shipped over 4 million months ago. I don't see why it's difficult to see a ~4.5 million shipment for MGS4.
