Well its kinda sad to read this coz sega's software has been doin well the last year- in fact they seem to releasing interesting software on all platforms.. i guess it must be sammy's fault then.. oh well.. onto the winter olympics!

Second Year of Sega Sammy Losses

Times are tough. Sega Sammy knows. The company has released its 2008 fiscal results, posting a loss for the second year straight.

The company chalked up a net ¥ 22.88 billion loss, which was less than the ¥52.47 billion loss of last year. The company's pachinko and arcade business caused financial bleeding. While game sales were firm, there was a 7.5 percent decline in those sales.

Sega Sammy did see a pretax profit of ¥6.64 billion compared to the previous year's ¥8.22 billion, but is already forecasting a 2.1 percent decrease in sales for the next financial year.

In order to cut costs, Sega Sammy is offering an early retirement program.

Doubt is not a pleasant condition, but certainty is absurd.

Yeah, this is sad. I wish arcades would make a comeback.

Hey I did my part when I visited Japan, and I dumped some money into some Sega pachinko machines and I even won a stuffed goomba in a Sega UFO catcher.

Here are some photos from my trip to a SEGA UFO Catcher arcade, where apparently they bleed money like crazy. You may click for larger versions.

Some of the Club Segas even have videos with this spokeswoman talking about how awesome and easy their UFO Catchers are.

Harry Potter's cloak. For reals.

If you click on this one you'll get to a really big photo so you can get a good look at the T-Shirts on the right side. I won that goomba on the bottom left, right next to the hole. It took me 5 tries, at 100 yen each, so I spent 500 yen on it. Later I saw it at a store and it cost way more! I won! Woo!

(I also tried to win some Neon Genesis Evangelion Doritos in a Namco UFO Catcher, but to no avail.)

mario merchandise in a sega machine :) interesting...
