Forums - Sales - Does a player base know quality?

@NJ5

I am not going to manipulate the figures based upon a subjective point of view. You go down that road, and you have a mountain of excuses. When in the end they will only cancel one another out. Arriving back at the same conclusion. You gripe about the delayed ports, he gripes about the PC cross platforming, she gripes about lower game prices.

Do you have empirical evidence for your claims about rating inflation. I highly doubt that, and if you do please provide a link to the statistical study. Otherwise it is just your word against their word. You say they were influenced, and they say your just influenced by your personal agenda.

Honestly I think the reviews were incredibly accurate. Grand Theft Auto deserved its ratings on sheer volume alone. A sixteen player online mode, a sixty hour main story mode, twenty hours in side quests. With a sandbox template. That ensures close to one hundred and twenty hours of game play in the first crack alone. That is surreal value. Few if any console games have that kind of balance, and are that loaded. No it deserved very high ratings. To not rate it highly would have been a crime not the other way around.

If we use another perfectly valid list of quality games (this one), and eliminate Wii Sports (thus having only 9 games in the list instead of 10), this is what we get:

SMG - 8.02
MK:Wii - 15.73
MP3 - 1.52
Brawl - 8.49
Zelda - 5.28
RE4 Wii - 1.58
Fire Emblem - 0.41
Okami - 0.22
Zack & Wiki - 0.37

Total - 41.62 million

Which gets your metric of Software Percentage to 14% with just 9 games. Much closer to the other two consoles.

Don't take this post as my endorsement of this calculation method though...

Take a wild guess.

Ok, I will but let me ask you this.. Why do people get upset when their favorite system isn't selling as well as another system that they perceive to be inferior?

Ok that was a bit dodgy..

Huh, who are upset because of that? I'm not upset that a trashy nissan outsells my bmw. :) Why would I be upset because an inferior console outsells my favourite console?

Oh.. let me guess. Because the leading console gets all the good games. Wait a sec...

Perfectly valid. I see. How about I make a list, it would be as valid as that one. :)

I'm not telling you you should manipulate the figures. I'm telling you that they don't support your conclusion about the userbase's perceived quality of the games. Let's imagine a hypothetical console whose 10 best rated games were all ports of games from a highly popular previous console. The userbase might very well "know (the) quality" of those games, but they still wouldn't necessarily buy them.

Don't bother with fixing that problem though, as many other problems would still remain (as is necessarily the case when taking top 10 lists as gospel).

@Esa-Petteri: It could be, since quality is subjective. So go ahead and make your own lists by all means.

nice approach....

i'll only point out that you have 3 music games in your Wii list... A genre that reviewers just love... whatever the amount of these you throw at them.

however the same reviewers bashed in ratings the most popular games of the Wii, the ones that are the most played and also the ones acclaimed as the most fun (best quality to have for a video game)... wii sports and MK wii. That is where this fails....

@Hephaestos

Yours is not an uncommon mindset you equate quality with popularity. That simply is not correct. Popularity can persist in spite of poor quality. Quality is a testament to originality, care, and refinement. Nintendo got poorer ratings for not taking their game to the next level.

Should they be rewarded for that. I am not sure a simple timeless formula has its own virtue, but in gaming if your not getting decidedly better then your really standing still as others pass you by. Honestly I prefer the bold that will try to push the envelope.

For example I have asked people that have played all the versions of Mario Kart how much better do they feel the Wii version of the game is. Often I get the reply of a tad. A tad better, a tad worse, or about the same. So the series has not seen a dramatic improvement in more then ten years? Then why should it be getting the same high marks each time. Do not get me wrong it can be good, but did the developer do what it took to make it great.

oops. Double post

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

And shepherds we shall be,

For Thee, my Lord, for Thee. Power hath descended forth from Thy hand, That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command. So we shall flow a river forth to Thee And teeming with souls shall it ever be. In Nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritūs Sancti. -----The Boondock Saints

Not putting Mario Kart Wii on that list is insulting I don't care that it didn't get 90+% it's a quality game no matter what bribed reviewers says.

Do you have any evidence to support your claims about bribed reviewers or are you just butthurt because some people dislike mario kart?
