Forums - Sales - Does a player base know quality?

Out of curiosity I wished to see how much of a impact the top ten highest rated games for each console had on total software sales. These ratings are via gamerankings, because well it was easy to find a quality based listing, and since it is a compilation rating it is exceedingly impartial. I also had to skip over unreleased games, or game sales that did not have adequate data, but on the whole I think it is a very strong effort.

I started this little adventure to prove a point in another thread where the claim was that 360 owners overwhelmingly supported a specific genre. My argument was that it could just be a matter of quality. I think this proves my point fairly well. Needless to say with this leg work and a secondary point that was probably stronger then the primary I thought it was good enough for its own thread, but on to what these numbers show us. The 360 user base has the strongest affinity towards quality. While the Wii user base has the weakest. The PS3 actually shows a fairly good afinity towards quality.

My personal opinion is these numbers probably show what most of us already know, but it is nice to have some solid confirmation. Though it is interesting to note that PS3 owners are not that far behind their 360 counterparts, and it also must be mentioned that Wii owners probably need to be ashamed of themselves. Eleven percent is just embarrassing. Especially considering that the first three make up two thirds of the sales. Anyway discuss.

Super Mario Galaxy, 8.02mil. Twilight Princess, 5.28mil. Brawl, 8.49mil. Resident Evil 4, 1.58mil. Rock Band 2, .54mil. Okami, .22mil. Metroid Prime 3, 1.52mil. Guitar Hero 3, 4.21mil. Guitar Hero World Tour, 2.93mil. PES 2009, .02mil.

 PS3 total 21.88mil. 360 total 43.67mil. Wii total 32.81mil. Software percentage which is how much of software do these titles account for. PS3 17%, 360 19% Wii 11%.

Please keep the conversation civil. These are the numbers, and not opinions. All conclusions have been derived from the numbers, and I had no idea exactly what the numbers would exactly show before I ran them. Further more I would have provided them regardless. I am not in the habit of deleting over an hours work. So there is no place for personal attacks in this. I did my absolute best with the available data, and no I am not intentionally neglecting some relevant fact. I did not do twenty or thirty, because I did not want to spend half a day doing this.

Interesting. You could of course add that the PS3 versions of Rock Band 2 and Bioshock would be higher if their launches hadn't been smothered. Bioshock being a late port, and Rock Band 2 not releasing in PAL until recently.

From the numbers The PS3 users has the strongest affinity towards quality

This is of course assuming reviews correlate perfectly with quality, which is a very loaded assumption given the gaming media's susceptibility to hype and other problems.

I don't Understand Why you would not put Fable II in the 360 section.....

Well, that is not a big surprise. 360 owners know what quality is. ;)

@Zizzla_Rachet

The games were not of my choosing. I was entirely impartial I just used the top ten rated games on Gamerankings, and skipped over the unreleased, or those with poor sales tracking.

@Rainbird

Delays are irrelevant to the question. The quality should sell regardless of release date. In fact it only proves a point if the PS3 owners steer clear of a game due to it being released first on another platform. That means they are allowing an outside influence to taint their affinity for quality. That is a weakness.

@NJ5

Actually the sway in ratings proves that reviewers as a group can maintain their objectivity in the face of public pressure. We have to trust in the fact that they care about how they perform their jobs. In fact it probably causes a negative flow. In that they will be more critical in compensating for their own biases. At the end of the day that should cancel much of the hype out of the equation, and that the averaging will do the rest.

So 360 owner like quality shooters???

j/k

OT: I would only gripe about Bioshock being there for the PS3 since it was a year old port released at full price. But otherwise a good thread.

This thread is garbage because... well.. Gamerankings is an awful site to measure quality with because the reviews are intended for one audience and quality is subjective.

Pixel Art can be fun.
