Forums - Gaming - I have never played a Final Fantasy game before. Why one should I get?

If you just want to start getting into to JRPGs I actually wouldn't start with Final Fantasy. I'd start with Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana or Super Mario RPG. Those games are easy to learn but still difficult enough to challenge you.

"Pier was a chef, a gifted and respected chef who made millions selling his dishes to the residents of New York City and Boston, he even had a famous jingle playing in those cities that everyone knew by heart. He also had a restaurant in Los Angeles, but not expecting LA to have such a massive population he only used his name on that restaurant and left it to his least capable and cheapest chefs. While his New York restaurant sold kobe beef for $100 and his Boston restaurant sold lobster for $50, his LA restaurant sold cheap hotdogs for $30. Initially these hot dogs sold fairly well because residents of los angeles were starving for good food and hoped that the famous name would denote a high quality, but most were disappointed with what they ate. Seeing the success of his cheap hot dogs in LA, Pier thought "why bother giving Los Angeles quality meats when I can oversell them on cheap hotdogs forever, and since I don't care about the product anyways, why bother advertising them? So Pier continued to only sell cheap hotdogs in LA and was surprised to see that they no longer sold. Pier's conclusion? Residents of Los Angeles don't like food."

I recommend Chrono Trigger, because the story in this game attracts even those who do not like RPG. I love this game, and this is one of the things that never will change in my life.

Since you have a DS your options are:

FF1 and 2: Dawn of Souls (GBA)
FF3 (DS)
FF4 (GBA)
FF4 (DS)
FF5 (GBA)
FF6 (GBA)

I say 6 then 4.

6 has the greatest cast of characters, best music, and best story structure.  It's got something for everybody.  It has the best action-oriented plot.  Big things happen.  Big decisions are made.  It's awesome and epic in every way.  And loads of fun to play.  And the world is much huger and more diverse than the world in 4, so there's much more exploring to do.

4 has an amazing story that ties together every single character and the plot in an amazing package.  But it's more focused on character development than a crazy epic plot.  It's very good, but a different kind of story and game.  I think it's a super incredible game but because of that and one spoiler I can't tell you, I think it's not a good "first Final" Fantasy.  Definitely try it later though.

The first 3 will just be too hard and boring if they're your first game in the series, and I haven't played 5 yet.

Or listen to this guy.

All 3 of those are amazing games and would be great first games.

Super Mario RPG is available on the VC.  You could be playing it RIGHT NOW.

I've never played a FF game either, and my friend just recently (he's been trying for years) managed to get me to buy FF8 through Amazon. He says it's the most amazing game ever and that I'll love it.

The lack of FF8 mentions in here is making me question what the hell is going on... :P

Either my friend just made me make a horrible decision, or you guys have whacked out tastes.

I'm also extremely surprised at the lack of FF7 mentions, considering how crazy-popular that game is.

EDIT: Actually I have played FF6 for about the first two hours before, and I found it extremely boring and never touched it again.

Definatly get Chrono Trigger, it's my favorite JRPG. Try downloading Secret of Mana and Super Mario RPG on the VC as well.

Do not play FFVIII first. Grab FFVI on the GBA. Or FFIV on the DS, if you want a challenge.

FFVIII is only a good introduction in that it will familiarize you with how different each Final Fantasy is compared to every other.

i suggest 4, or 8. i liked them the best.

or if your someone who complains about graphics then pick up 10

Edited my post after you quoted me. :P I have played the original FF6 (completely forgot about this) for about 2 hours or so, and I was extremely bored, put the game down, and never touched it again. =\
