Since you have a DS your options are:
FF1 and 2: Dawn of Souls (GBA)
FF3 (DS)
FF4 (GBA)
FF4 (DS)
FF5 (GBA)
FF6 (GBA)
I say 6 then 4.
6 has the greatest cast of characters, best music, and best story structure. It's got something for everybody. It has the best action-oriented plot. Big things happen. Big decisions are made. It's awesome and epic in every way. And loads of fun to play. And the world is much huger and more diverse than the world in 4, so there's much more exploring to do.
4 has an amazing story that ties together every single character and the plot in an amazing package. But it's more focused on character development than a crazy epic plot. It's very good, but a different kind of story and game. I think it's a super incredible game but because of that and one spoiler I can't tell you, I think it's not a good "first Final" Fantasy. Definitely try it later though.
The first 3 will just be too hard and boring if they're your first game in the series, and I haven't played 5 yet.
Or listen to this guy.

All 3 of those are amazing games and would be great first games.
Super Mario RPG is available on the VC. You could be playing it RIGHT NOW.
