Forums - Sales - Too many first/second party PS3 titles for holiday season a bad idea?

If Sony release GT5 during a season packed with huge franchises GT will be the biggest of them all along with Modern Warfare 2 and Halo ODST. Other games will go around GT5 and not go head to head.

The best example is Forza 3, release that anywhere close to GT5 and that is nothing but suicide. It's a monster franchise and I think it would be good to release it in December, if the rumour is correct GT5 will have a WW release for December 1st or March 2010. GT has it's own (terrible) show but a show none the less so Forza 3 really needs to release before it.

GOW III vs GT5 is just asking for trouble, sure they are not from the same genre but people might have to choose between the two. A 3 month gap will do wonders and it's a lock that GOW III will release March 2010. The latest video was from 7 months ago and a lot changes in that period of time so I am sure PD and Sony are getting ready for a Christmas release.

WTF is worng with you, id kill for GT5 and GOW3 same day release.

Id only have to walk into that god forsaken mall once to pick up my games then call work take my vacation and bury me self in gaming extasy.

err no that would just be stupid. Release Ratchet and Clank, Uncharted 2 and GT5 this holiday season. Then GOW III for March 2010, Heavy Rain and MAG for June 2010 when the MF2 fatigue hits and that about take's care of what has been announced. New big exclusives revealed such as the obvious Resistance 3 and others for holiday 2010.

@papflasje you also have to think about all the 3rd party games releasing. I for one if having to choose would choose MF2 over MAG and any other first party title besides GT5. The number of 3rd party games during the holiday season will be big and many will choose them over first/second party titles.

Which begs the question......why do you lot not rent? I will play all these games and more yet save so much monies.

I'm with you on the first four.

Heavy Rain isn't going to sell well, anyway. It's a niche game, and it could do with a holiday boost. . The majority of gamers would strongly dislike Heavy Rain. Releasing it along with some other games isn't going to do anything; the holiday season is when people are in the mood to buy most. And Heavy Rain is unlike any PS3 game currently out; it's like saying Crack in Time will threaten FIFA 10's sales. Delaying it would hurt interest, cost money as the team is idle, and hurt sales.

MAG in June 2010...hmm. I think this is another title which needs holiday rush. It's not the kind of game people massively anticipate, it's the kind of game you'd see in a store and think "hmm, cool" and possibly end up purchasing it.

Nobody really cares about Resistance anymore. The first game was good, and people were hoping for a huge improvement in the sequel, but there wasn't one. Whether it's better or worse than Fall of Man is debatable. But it's not the AAA FPS a lot of people (like myself) were expecting it to be. Not that I dislike it, it's a solid 8/10, but a Resistance game isn't worth holding your breath for.

mid-2010 would see EyePet (lolz), God of War III, Quantum Theory, Under Siege (maybe), FF13, , LA Noire, and a bunch of multiplats and unannounced games.

The holiday season would have Resistance 3, MotorStorm 3, FF Versus XIII, the next Jak game, and Syphon Filter, I would think. And Team ICO's project which will blow away every PS3 game except God of War III released that year and perhaps ever!

So true Resistance 2 was an absolutely terrible game. I am not going to start about Team ICO's but I assume people know just what I think of their games. I don't think I am going overboard in saying that GT5 alone would be more than enough for the Sony first/second party this year. What I can see is a price drop near the release of GT5 and then all the other first/second party Sony titles feeding off it.

GT5, Ratchet and Clank: ACIT, Uncharted 2, GOW III are all guaranteed million sellers and even though the franchise has gone down the shitter so is Resistance 3. If Versus remains exclusive it is going to be huge for holiday 2010, Sony will make sure SE know where JRPG sell best.

Surely one of the UK studios is making a retail game such as a new Wipeout, I shudder to think 250 people are needed to maintain HOME.

Resistance 2 wasn't terrible. It was good. Just not brilliant, and nothing earth-shattering. Just another FPS. Ho-hum.

As for Team ICO, you are in a minority there and you know it. The majority of people who don't buy Team ICO games do so because they haven't heard of them. And Team ICO are gaming gods.

As for a price drop...Sony can't afford it. Forecasted $1.5 billion for the whole company for FY2009. They need to start profiting on the PS3 as soon as they can. If that means leaving it at its current price for another year, so be it.

GT5 won't win the holiday season (HD wars) alone, but it will help. To be honest, I think that without a price cut, the 360 will take this year again. Unless Sony pulls off a miracle and brings PS3 manufacturing costs below $350, they can't cut the price.

Those games are all million sellers, and they will be irrespective of when they release- March, May, September or December. And I doubt Versus is going multiplat now. There's no point.

And of course the UK studios are making something! 250 people don't maintain Home. I wouldn't think that more than ten people maintain Home. Wasn't MotorStorm UK-developed?

1. No it was terrible.

2. Yeah Team ICO's cult following are on gaming forums and I am never going to win that battle.

3. But I wonder if Sony see it as financially viable to do so and make up that money in software sales. It is a gamble but with all the first/second party games coming as well as a reduction (whatever the amount) in production costs Sony might see it as being a worthwhile choice.

4. GT5 will win no HD war but it will sell a fuckton.

5. But there is a difference between a million seller and a 2-3 million seller.

6. Yeah Evolution Studios is based in the UK. SCE London alone has 250 employees let alone the Liverpool and Cambridge studios.

BTW the super secret PS3 game still exists :P

It's clear some of the games slated for an '09 release won't really be released until '10 , it's good PR to make the console look like it will have a wealth of titles and Sony might still be deliberating about what title should be released when , it's better to just say they'll all be released than to say the release of all of the above is unsure.

Killzone was supposed to release christmas '08 but they pushed that back in favour of a Resistance ,LBP , Socom christmas.

1) You may have thought it was terrible. But it wasn't. What made it terrible? It was perfectly functional, reasonably fun to play most of the time, and lasted a while.

2) Agreed.

3) They might, I guess. If they sell an extra 4 million PS3s at an extra $50 loss, that's 200 million lost. We don't know how much they get per sale, though.

4) Yeah, but it's no substitute for a price cut which may or may not be financially viable.

5) They'll all (perhaps with the exception of Crack in Time) be 2 million sellers, again, regardless of release date. Even ACIT could break 2 million, since it's launching on a decent userbase this time...what was it when ToD released, 5 million?

6) Good. Then they're making MotorStorm 3, next WipEout, and something else, I guess

And what super secret PS3 game?

1. The online co-op was so addicting so I am being harsh but the single player was just terrible and was a grave departure from the first. Insomniac also seemed to feel guilty when the game released so perhaps have learnt there lesson.

2. Yeppers

3. With all the games releasing from first/second party I'm sure at least 3-4 would appease most so I think a price cut will happen. If there is no price cut when GT5 releases colour me surprised.

4. It sells systems. it would sell many more systems at $300 then $400 and also it would be very likely those new to the console would also pick up some new games.

5. Market saturation is what you need to learn about but I agree and will say the new Ratchet should sell 2 million. GT5 will sell that much in a week and I also think Uncharted 2 will do 1 million within a month. MAG is a shooter and even though I think it will be murdered by MF2 it should still do 1 million within 2 months.

6. Yep it's great that Sony have such a large first party, so many studios have still to give us a game.

Super scret BBC reporter game of course.

Sorry to bump this but does anyone really think MAG can do 1 million near MF2 or any other shooter during the holiday season?

Do you Modern Warfare 2?

If so....And if these game release close to each other(1 Month)...I expect MAG to do KZ2 numbers if it's lucky....

Yeah people getting really horny over Killzone 2 numbers............1.57m within a year is anything but bad.

OT my guess is that GT5, Ratchet and Clank: ACIT, MAG or Heavy Rain and Uncharted 2 will release during the holiday period. However this is with Uncharted 2 in September, MAG or Heavy Rain on October, ratchet in November and the big daddy GT5 in December.

But that makes too much sense so it will not happen.
