Forums - Sony - The PS3 won't make it past 2012 in America at retail.

Too bad the ps2 is still selling in most stores, as opposed to the game cube and xbox. If wii and MS come out with new systems, the ps3 will still have it's own shelf space, plus the ps2's to work with. No problem here, keep fishing.

You do realize that the PS2 is still selling in most stores because it was the market leading console of the previous generation (a position the Wii holds in this generation), and the primary reason why the Gamecube isn't still on the shelf was that it was the third place console (a position the PS3 holds) and its sales dropped off when the "next generation" began because the support for "next generation" consoles came (primarily) at the expense of the trailing consoles.

Thats what I believe. Does anyone have any good reason to counter that without referencing a 10 year plan?

Retailers and consumers decide how long something remains on the shelves. So if there are next generation consoles competing for shelf space, that shelf space is only going to come out of the lowest selling consoles alotment. It happens every time a generation switch over occours, and there has never been a precedent where 2-3 next generation and 2-3 current generation consoles have been sold at the same time at retail. So why would we face anything different if the same basic reasons behind this are the same? Since the PS3 is the lowest selling console, it will be the first to get kicked to the curb.

Ha ha HA ha

ur thinking that the PS3 will remain with its current low performance sales wise is wat ur problem is

the PS3 will be around longer than most think once it gets to lower price points to wat the 360 is currently at and even lower like 150$ sales will EXPLODE they will EXPLODE this year cause i think that the PS3 will be priced at 300$ b4 the years ends.

The consoles that have a better chance of not selling years from now are the ones that inferior, PS3 has a blu ray player free online and rechargeable battery built into the DS3 and more power potential  for devs all those factors cant be said about the other consoles.

Wen the new gen begins wenever it is the new consoles will be priced at 300-400+ can u imagine a costumer going into a gamming store and seeing a 400+$ console next to a 150$ PS3 that has  blu ray and by then a remarkable game libary it will be like the ps2 vs 360 wen the 360 came out and we all know who sold more than

Yet the two consoles which sell the most use AA batteries, one hardly has online to speak of and the other has the largest online community on a console yet, neither have blu ray and yet the console which comes with Blu Ray doesn't come with either a remote or an HD cable.

Well, how about trying that $150 PS3 against a $250 Wii or a $299 Xbox evolution Arcade? Also the consoles will certainly be able to outperform the PS3 significantly by that time in a noticeable way even laymen can see.

ur right none of those features matter now but wen the next gen starts and the ps3 is at 150$ compared to a 400$ 720 or even 300$ wii2 they will, and they will matter soon once the ps3 gets to 300$ and below which i predict will happen this year

i dont think so have u seen the graphix for KZ2 compared to Halo 3 or KZ2 compared to any current console FPS? by 2012 PS3s gaming will be way different than todays once technology catches up to it its future games will make its current games look inferior.  The PS3 was purposely build the way it is its so called future proof so that it can take on the the next gen 150$ PS3 vs 300$-500$ next gen consoles sounds like PS3 win to me

I've seen KZ2 on a 53" High end Bravia, It was pretty good. Still, I hate dark games. I liked Gears 2 better because the visuals were clearer for me. By 2012, you say? By 2012 you could probably build a new console which was more than 3* as powerful as the PS3 for the same price, its fixed hardware remember? The PS2 was also a future proofed console, remember what happened with that also?

by 2012 ps3 may be hitting the 200$ price cuts. manufacturing gets cheaper remenber that.

I think what Squilliam was saying was based on the fact that the PS4 will not be out by 2012 alongside the next Xbox and next Wii. Mostly because they want the PS3 to be out longer (aka 10 year plan). What he is saying that once the new consoles come out, the shelf space will shift to Wii 2, XboxNext, Wii, and Xbox 360 in the US. The PS3 will possibly share a small bit for another year, but the moment the PS4 comes out, the PS3's space will disappear and kill the 10 year plan. Either that of they won't release a PS4 and the PS3 will disappear due to dated tech.

The reality is that all the Sony fanboys want a Sony price cut to $300, but with more losses being reported by Sony any day now of $1.5 Billion USD, they obviously cannot afford to start taking another $100-125 loss per console sold.

... and by 2012 the 7 year gap between the XBox 360 and the next generation console would translate to a $300 console being between 8 and 16 times as powerful as the XBox 360/PS3 are.

Wow, Squilliam made the argument with good intent (or bad if you are a Sony fan), but he just made us aware of the fact that it's the X360 who will be kicked out of retail shelves first, around 2012, for being the worst selling console at that time by far.

:((

Damn it, this is a lot to ponder about, what does this mean for the overlapping X360 sales into next gen (or it's 'legs' if you will)? They'll be minimal I'm afraid, and the risk of coming 3d, eventually, is very big for the X360 all of a sudden.

The PS3 simply has to put up or shut up this year. If it does not make it to at least second (for living room consoles) in worldwide sales by January 1, 2010 the game is over.

The defining moment this year will be at E03. If Microsoft equals or beats Sony with announcements then Sony is in trouble because most people expect Microsoft to lose E03 by a wide margin.

If Microsoft goes toe-to-toe in announcements, it will be equivalent to a Microsoft win. Even with a price cut to $299, the PS3 is still $100 over the cheapest 360. As we saw last Christmas price is king, and during a global recession it becomes even more important.

I don't think Sony has to catch up that fast. I think they need to be no more than 5 million below the 360 worldwide sales to date to prevent "game over". I think everyone agrees that they need to do better than last place this holiday season though. E3 announcements will help. What does everyone think would happen if they announced God of War 3 is being released this holiday season? Even though I don't personally like the game, can you say "system seller"?

That fast?  Its been three Christmases since the PS3 was released, with the largest install base from the previous generation and one of the most recognizable brand names in recent history.

Dont get me wrong, I want a healthy competitor to Microsoft for the harder core gaming arena.  But, Sony better get their act together.  PS3 sales are down year over year.  That is not a good sign.  Especially, since their lineup is already mostly announced for 2009 and into 2010.

It was only discontinued because their sales had fallen to a level where further production was unnecessary (because it would take years to work through the inventory) ... The unknown with all these discussions is how people will react to current generation consoles when the first of the next generation consoles is released. If it is anything like previous generations the PS3 will be in trouble though.

Edit: To put it another way ... Consoles don't stop selling because they were discontinued, they are discontinued because they stopped selling. It doesn't matter what a console manufacturer wants, only consumer demand will keep a console alive for 10+ years; and the technical specifications and features have very little to do with what consumers want in a console.

Squil, reading threads you make is unbearable. You have the worst logic ever.

When you just *post* in someone elses thread, you use logic. You don't sound like a fanboy.

When you do stuff like this, you're just a fanboy. It's annoying=/

Beyond that, he's not willing to listen to logic, like from werekitten for instance. He says the PS3 BARELY has an online? Yes I agree that the 360 definitely has better communication capabilities (at the moment) such as party chat in game, private chat in game and cross game invites. But the PS3's online isn't non-existent.

Recently, I've spent more time on PS3 than the 360, because of Killzone 2, Street Fighter IV online and Home. The PS3 has grown into it's own, and will be around in 2012 if Sony continues to push it, as they have been doing a better job at as of late (last 3 1/2 months)

I didn't say that the PS3 barely has any online, I said the Wii barely has any online and the Xbox 360 had the most people online. Oh and Werekitten is evil, he makes Martha Stuart look like a princess.
