The PS3 simply has to put up or shut up this year. If it does not make it to at least second (for living room consoles) in worldwide sales by January 1, 2010 the game is over.

The defining moment this year will be at E03. If Microsoft equals or beats Sony with announcements then Sony is in trouble because most people expect Microsoft to lose E03 by a wide margin.

If Microsoft goes toe-to-toe in announcements, it will be equivalent to a Microsoft win. Even with a price cut to $299, the PS3 is still $100 over the cheapest 360. As we saw last Christmas price is king, and during a global recession it becomes even more important.

I don't think Sony has to catch up that fast. I think they need to be no more than 5 million below the 360 worldwide sales to date to prevent "game over". I think everyone agrees that they need to do better than last place this holiday season though. E3 announcements will help. What does everyone think would happen if they announced God of War 3 is being released this holiday season? Even though I don't personally like the game, can you say "system seller"?

That fast?  Its been three Christmases since the PS3 was released, with the largest install base from the previous generation and one of the most recognizable brand names in recent history.

Dont get me wrong, I want a healthy competitor to Microsoft for the harder core gaming arena.  But, Sony better get their act together.  PS3 sales are down year over year.  That is not a good sign.  Especially, since their lineup is already mostly announced for 2009 and into 2010.
