Forums - Nintendo - Quick DS question

Just wondering if any knew if the DS allows a DS game to take full control over the cart in the GBA slot? I know some games (ie Metroid Prime Pinball) have used it for a periferal slot, but can it do a full read on a ROM in the slot?

I am a Gauntlet Adventurer.

I strive to improve my living conditions by hoarding gold, food, and sometimes keys and potions. I love adventure, fighting, and particularly winning - especially when there's a prize at stake. I occasionally get lost inside buildings and can't find the exit. I need food badly. What Video Game Character Are You?

I don't think it can really be used for much more than an accessory, like a Rumble Pak or camera...but I'm not an expert.

Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

Pokémon has used both slots on occasion.

The ability is there but few games utilize it.

The rEVOLution is not being televised

Well yeah, you can play GBA games with it, so I'm not sure why not. The DS Browser uses it too. It has an expansion thats extra memory.

It does allow for it... but there really isn't a point... at least none that I can think of other then trading save files etc from older games.  The DS carts have now been expanded in size to 256MB and 512MB so you aren't limited so much in game sizes.  Most likely we'll see the 1024MB cart before the end of the DS's lifecycle.  When the successor is announced for the DS I fully expect it to launch with 512MB and 1024MB carts and expand all the way up to 4GB and 8GB carts before the end of it's life.

Prepare for termination! It is the only logical thing to do, for I am only loyal to Megatron.

I was thinking for expansion of software. Say you make a DS game that is like a game studio that lets you make games and trade them with friends. You would want to provide as many features for it to make it flexable, and cram the DS cart with sprite templates, sound effects, etc. You could then save the games out to GBA carts and take along the ones you want with you.

or maybe like some "Learn To Read" type software for kids, where the stories were all on seperate GBA carts that you could bring with you. Then you could store dictionaries and speach synthesis software on the DS so you could tap words, get their meanings and synonyms, and have the DS pronounce the word for you.

Just a few ideas I had for use with this type of thing

Why wouldn't you save them on the DS cart? I'm not following the reason to have it on a GBA cart. If you want to trade things with friends just link up wirelessly and then send it to them. Why is it more convenient to carry around a GBA cart instead of a DS cart?

I am guessing if the DS slot1 runs out of space, the slot 2 probably could be used for more storage. They can be used at the same time.
