Forums - Sales - MS can either make $$$ or outsell PS3, NOT BOTH.

You're making some hellishly big assumptions here.

1. We don't know how profitable or loss making the Xbox 360 is. With the PS3 we have one loss maker, the PS3 mixed in with the PSP which likely at least breaks even and the PS2 which is still almost a pure money spinner. With the Xbox 360, we have a profit maker -> Xbox 360 mixed in with a whole bunch of loss makers and R+D slush projects. With the Xbox 360, they stated previously that they broke even with accessories and with the recession looming the component and shipping prices and the fact that the average sale price is $290 in the U.S.A its quite likely that the current console sales net them a small margin. Also the losses this last financial year were not attributed to the Xbox 360, it was R+D.

2. You're assuming that the PS3 WILL drop to $299. Heres some magical news which you probably don't want to hear. If Sony lowers the price by $100, they will have to make up any losses on the extra consoles that it sells. If Microsoft matches such a price cut their sales won't rise nearly as much and it will end up costing them money. So how likely is it that Sony will be able to get an unanswered price cut of $100? Quite unlikely actually and since Microsoft has already stated their intention to hold the PS3 to third the chances of them making such a drastic drop in retaliation are very good if not expected.

3. Not all the games you listed will come out in the next 7 months. Many people expect a lot of the games you listed to come out in 2010.

4. During the Holiday quarter, the sale balance between others and Americas shifts from 110:100 to the Others to 100:110 Americas and this is the Xbox 360s strongest region. Also since a much more casual userbase starts purchasing consoles, the price is an even greater facter than ever before. A $150 Arcade is still half the price of a $300 PS3 and during the silly season the Xbox 360 has shown a great advantage over the PS3 in terms of sales. For example last Christmas the Xbox 360 was hugely above the PS3 in terms of both ratio and absolute sales. The Christmas before that when the PS3 had its $200 price cut, the Xbox 360 sales = the PS3s sales. Theres still a good chance that even a $50 price cut to a $100 price cut would seal an advantage for the Xbox 360 during the Holidays.

Sony can't outsell 360 and can't make profit.So what?

Obviously another example of someone who only reads the title of a thread, then comments.

I suppose you also do movie reviews after watching a trailer? Or reviewing a book after looking at it's cover?

Ignorance at it's finest.

no but that's generally how you decide if you'll read the book or watch the movie

Oh geez, you again???

Do you ever think before you post?(looks like you're trying to in your avatar)

So you're basically saying that by viewing the topic, he should have decided to read it or not. If he DID read it, then he could comment on it.

He obviously did NOT read it so you're whole point has nothing to do with this situation at all.

Yet another example of selective price point usage. Sorry its just one of my pet peeves and it seems like the same people that use the $200 price point in their arguments also call it a gimped sku in other threads..

I normally refrain from this, but ARE YOU A FUCKING RETARD???

Read the damn post and try to COMPREHEND it.

I did NOT ever state that PS3 outsold 360 for the entire year of 2008. I stated that PS3 outsold it for a period of time BEFORE September 2008 before 360 dropped to $199

"and 360 profited in 2008" Yeah NO SHIT. I also CLEARLY stated in my post that the 360 profited $267 million in 2008.

You start your post off with: "Look, how wrong you are:" , then you reiterate the same facts that I posted??? What the hell are you smoking tonite???

I wonder if the original poster comprehends that the the 45nm process also applies to Microsoft, and their chip sets as well. Meaning that Microsoft enjoys the exact same cost savings. Actually Microsoft actually saves more, because their machine was more power intensive, and reduced consumption means they can streamline components such as cooling fans, and the famous power brick.

I also wonder if the original poster has taken into account currency valuation, and the location of manufacturing facilities. The 360 is manufactured in China. The PS3 well a lot of it is manufactured in Japan. Home of the almighty Yen. So somebody is doing better for the recession, and somebody is doing worse. Want to take bets on which one is which.

Also another poster pegged it best the division within Microsoft could have lost money anywhere. Research and Development has a way of you know not actually generating profit. That happens years later, and perhaps not even in the same division. Basically you have no idea what Microsoft was losing money on. You will probably have to wait a couple more years.

Finally I agree with StrategyKing this is completely slanted Fanboy bullshit, and you are both egotistical, and condescending. Everyone has a right to a bad day, but I have a feeling this is one of your better ones. Keep insulting people, and your probably going to be banned. Then who is going to defend Sony with convoluted crap?
