Forums - Sales - Wii no longer up YoY in 2009 compared to 2008

Iwata said in their stock briefing earlier that he expected sales to be down through May. After June, he expects Wii Sports Resorts and the other titles to give Wii March-May 2008 like momentum heading into the Nov-Dec annual sales ramp up.

The 26m projection for Wii will probably end up like this if they meet it:

Americas ~ 13.75m (shipped 12.93m last FY)

Japan ~ 2.0m (shipped 2.09m last FY - I expect either a price cut or a few major titles which have yet to be announced)

Others ~ 10.25m (shipped 10.96m last FY)

DS is a bit different because it has DQIX, the Pokemon remakes, and Kingdom Hearts in Japan - at least and DS is still doing 40k a week there, so they projected 30m:

Americas ~ 11.5m (12.07 last FY)

Japan ~ 4.5m (4.01m last FY)

Others ~ 14m (15.11m (!) last FY)

*sigh*The fad is over people there is nothing to see here.

If you compare software releases in the same period of 2008 vs 2009, it kind of puts things into context. Software still sells hardware.

Having said that, I wouldn't be that surprised if sales were lower this year, especially due to the recession. I was never too convinced that the gaming industry wouldn't feel the impact as many believed. Not all the unemployed people will buy a console.

That was my argument in http://www.vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=67999&page=1

but pretty much everyone disagreed with me :p

Well that and now that Wii are in stock everywhere customers do not feel compelled to buy one when they see one....

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

So the Wii is now down YoY by around 55k units...

To put things in perspective at the end of Q1 the Wii was up YoY by 950k...

With three year since launch, it is normal to expect more ups and downs in the salesrate. It's still selling exceptionally in a recession and without any pricecut. Besides the lack of big selling software also adds to the slowdown. More software is to come, so we'll see.

I find it real funny that the Wii is now in competition with itself. Go wii of 2009 before the wii of 2008 catches you!

But in that thread you said the Wii will be 50% down year-over-year during several weeks of Q2... which is nowhere near happening if I'm seeing the numbers right.

Japan...you...you call yourselves gamers!? :o

Anyway, this is really because the Wii hasn't got jack (at least nothing big) the entire year =/

But Wii has...

Wii Sports Resort

Monster Hunter 3

Final Fantasy: Crystal Bearers

Wii Fit Plus

Samurai Warriors 3

Pikmin 3 (?)

Mario & Sonic Winter Olympics

Punch Out!!

Nintendo can announce some other stuff too. Like Mario Party 9 as one example. Also I think Tales of Graces will be out before March 2010 (fisical year).

Wii really needs those games.

MotionPlus and colors can also help...doubt they'll do a price cut anytime soon. And don't forget bundles. MH3 bundle = massive if they do it.

why should WSR be big?

just look at deca sports 2

everyone has Wii sports so why should WSR boost sales?

what the wii needs are 2-3 HUGE and 3-4 good games

i meant wtf now Punch out and Wii fit + are considered big games?

poor nintendo...

What are the numbers on the PS3 and 360, while you're at it?

Xbox360 is up YoY 950k

PS3 is down YoY 415k ( I took Japan MC numbers to get this week Japan).

So HD consoles are up 535k or so ( but with no GTA4 or MGS4 in the next 2 months they probably will be down by July timeframe).

Seriously Ail? Compare last years Wii releases to what was released this year. If it was an issue of popularity loss, it'd be far worse than 55k. SSBB, Mario Kart, Wii Fit, just for some examples

The Wii is down 68% YoY this week compared to the same week last year...
