Forums - Sony - UMD less Patapon 2 ... a dangerous trend ??

If they are going to do this UMD less games strategy they better find a way to decrease the size of games and fast, because The limit for a consumer at the moment is 8GB, thats the highest memory stick you can get.

Actually there are already 32 GB memory sticks out there. have a 16 GB.

ill never buy a console that has download only games. thats just silly. i dont even buy music online- I need the CD. I want something to prove that I have it. I want a case, artwork, and an instruction booklet too. and lastly, if my console or storage unit breaks, I want to still have the game and not have to pay for it again

Citing piracy as a reason for download only games is a cop out. The companies want to make "more" profit. PSP would not be alive if Sony was losing money on it. Software sales may be down but hardware sales were up.

Sony wanted PSP to replace your walkmens, your PMPs your gameboys etc. It is a multimedia device not just game and the focus was not on just games. Once this is rectified situation will improve.

One reason PSP did not take off (which is actually debatable as 47 Million is a HUGE number by any standards) as compared to DS is because DS has backward compatibility with gameboy. I bought one simply because it would be easier for me to have only one device. Innovative games (nintendogs, brain games) with DS added more casual gamers into the mix which did not happen with PSP but they came in later.

The library of PSP was filled with ports (and not so good ones at that), better games sold well. Sony had a chance with PSN to make PS1 games available on PSP which a lot of people would not have minded paying for again (including me) but they botched it.

I have used my PSP for skype, for music and for games. I also play PS1 games I own and the ones I got from PSN on it. I have not pirated games for it. Just because CFW is popular it doesn't mean people are pirating games.

Again, piracy is not an excuse to make people (who already pay for their games) pay for LESS.

Dude you use a few honest men like ourselves to prove any points, SONY's last statement about PSP sells were that the pirated to actually buyin ratio was sickening. If you put alot of effort into making a PSP game and 500,000 ppl have it but 90,000 actually bought it how would feel? if SONY doesn't solve the problem developer are going to stop supporting

I've said it before, I'll say it again: Sony, build the capacity to backup UMD games into official firmware. Use DRM to keep it from being copied all over the place. If you must, add a monthly disk check to make sure people aren't playing games they sold long ago. You just took out probably the largest 'gateway drug' into the world of unofficial firmware and piracy, made a ton of users happy, AND improved software sales (I promise you, if I don't have to carry around UMDs, there are at least two or three games I'll buy that I'd have to otherwise). You also don't have to worry about getting download rights this way. Additionally, the same technology could be applied to PS1 games (using the media manager and a PC's CD-ROM drive) to greatly alleviate problems with that-- I don't care much about the PS One classic store when I can toss a disk into my PC, rip it, and play it like that.

If you really want to go all out with fan-pleasing/piracy-stopping measures, create an iPhone-style Homebrew App store. You can put up the better games, the useful things (calculators, note takers, music apps) at minimal cost and let people have at it. People then have no practical excuse for developing custom firmware, and zero excuse for using it.

The first solution would take maybe a few days of coding to implement. The legalities are already clear-- you can back up your own media. You don't need to ask developers for permission to backup their games. The second situation would be more complicated, as you'd need staff to process games and lawyers to deal with contracts, as well as adding the facilities for it, and isn't nearly as essential.

"

While I don't agree with all of his sentiments, this captures what I want Sony to do pretty well.

To clarify, I don't mind paying for PS1 classics from PSN. I am already allowed to play them on a ps3 and anything more would definitely be  a bonus.

yeah but it's really really high at the moment at like 100GB per month or something.

It will be much much lower in the future.

That's pretty low IMO actually. I always have a hard time keeping within the 100GB limit. Shouldn't the cost of bandwidth be  dirt cheap by now? With consumers downloading larger and larger files shouldn't the cap be raised signifficantly in the coming years? Things like Blu Ray and etc are making these caps obsolete.

Notice how that scenario you made really shows an increased demand. Demand = Profit.

Right now, everyone has like 100GB or something Download limit. In the future, people like your granny, who only check mail will pay one price, and people who download BR files or the like will pay more.
At the moment it isn't sure whether the granny will pay the normal price and you will pay a higher price, or you will pay the regular price and she will be a discounted price.

I'm guessing they will do the most profitable thing. Charge you more.

That's so true.

But no chance to happen Sony is totaly paranoid about DRMs.

Dangerous? Maybe but it could also be awesome, very very awesome.

Currently dreaming of: DKC4 or Sonic the Hedgehog 4 (classic 2D platformers) for WiiWare, Smash Bros. for DSi, New Super Mario World for DSi, a Wii remake or true sequel of Final Fantasy Tactics.

One down, hopefully more awesomeness to come.
