Unfortunately Jagged, this is what company is forced to do when they are publicly traded. Microsoft has been dogged for years that they are bloated and need to get rid of people, which is really sad because Live division has been profitable, least of which from the results of hiring and having talented people.
Look at the last few months, Xbox Live released schedules, certification, and stuff they put up on Live has been a complete mess because they trim so much man-powers from sadly the area that are actually growing.
well no company is immune from the recession why should M$ be any different?
Long Live SHIO!

I think some companies use the economy as an excuse to do layoffs they wanted to do anyway... This probably doesn't explain the whole layoffs of course, which are also to preserve profits (which unfortunately for some, is the duty of a publically-owned company).

This is what they announced in January. Now it is the part where they decide which employes have to go or am I misreading something?
The article tries to spin the financial report in a very negative way if you ask me. Yes, the revenue is down YoY, but heck, we are in a global financial crisis and they still mad a 3 billion dollar profit in three months. Intels profit dropped 97%, Sony is posting a loss (a first since 1989), Samsung is in a struggle, same for Panasonic. Chrysler is broke, same for GM.
Sometime you just have to look out the window to see things in a right perspective.
Imagine not having GamePass on your console...
Yes this is old news, but do you also know that MS is hiring including about 80 openings in games and xbox business areas. http://members.microsoft.com/careers/search/results.aspx?start=1&interval=622&SortCol=Product&SortOrder=ASC&AllCl=Y
Its libraries that sell systems not a single game.

Not as bad as the UK, whose economy was based on a massively inflated housing market.

Same here hanafuda although the majority of US housing still is financed via prime loans and private investment (no mass govt involvement like the UK for housing yet) The Community Reinvestment Act really screwed up the housing appreciation rate/inflation coorelation.
