Forums - General - Crappy Netbook Question.

Hey guys, a couple of weeks ago i told my mum that i want a netbook and so she just bought me one for like 70€.

The thing is, it's REALLY crappy (spec wise). I don't have it yet so i ask the experts, can it run some basic stuff? Like Messenger and an Internet browser at the same time without lagging to death? Does anyone know? Pretty please?

Here are the specs:

Processor Ingenic JZ4730 366MHz
Memory 128MB SDRAM
S.S.D Storage (Solid-State Disk) 1GB
OS Supported Linux Preloaded

BTW it runs some custom version of Linux without terminal (not that i know what a terminal even is, but whatever)

Why would you ask for a netbook without knowing anything about what it can do (which is almost nothing)?

It can browse the internet and probably run Pidgin as an IM client if you can resolve any possible dependencies but seriously... a netbook?

Well i travel A LOT and i wanted something tiny to have in my bag, so its' 7" screen is pretty tiny :P and all i wanted was an IM Client and an internet browser so...

Should have two weeks return policy with no questions asked. I suggest you make use of that.

Is it linpus linux lite? Because I had trouble with my terminal, but there is an easy way to open it.

That netbook kind of sucks. Netbooks are great, but not that one. Like WoW said, Firefox and Pidgin. Don't expect much more.

And don't knock netbooks! :p This one is great!

Yes. Firefox and Pidgin. If you need anything else then install a more 'standard' Linux like a stripped-down Ubuntu or something. XP won't run on it. I would hack it to get a terminal up; the system is probably very locked down if you can't get one by default. Then you can start installing stuff.

By the way, that's basically a mobile phone CPU, and not a high-end one.

I know it sucks, big time. But that's the only one i could afford right now and i only want this Pidgin thing (i can still talk with people that use MSN right?) and Firefox, nothing at all. I read somewhere that the CPU isn't x86 and that it is some MIPS crap so i can't put any other OS.

Pfft.

Then not sure if Pigeon will work for you. If whatever browser it has on it can do JavaScript, you could try:
