Forums - Gaming - Is it because I wasn't lurking around on the net last gen or...

Do people worry too much about sales numbers now a days instead of just focusing on the games? I ask this because not too long ago we had this article about how gamers worry too much about gaming sales.

http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/2009/04/06/tim-schafer-gamers-worry-too-much-about-sales/

Now I know this does not account for everyone, but now when I go to Gamefaqs or just about any gaming site for that matter I tend to see threads about a game's sales with people trolling the game based on sales numbers while completely ignoring what a gamer should really care about, which is whether or not the game is actuall fun to play.

So maybe I missed out on all that happened on the net last gen, so I ask, "Has it always been this way?"

To be honest it gets quite tiresome when I go to a site like Gamefaqs to ask a question about a game only to have someone come in and shit all over the game in question because some game on some other console sold better. What does it matter?

Sorry for the mini-rant to go with my question.

By the way I do understand this is a sales site, that is why I do not complain about this site. I am just curious as to whether or not it has always been this way on other sites around the net as well.

For the past 2 generations, there wasn't much to talk about. Sony completely dominated their opponents, to the point where it wasn't even worth discussing the sales of their competitors. And before the PS1, the internet didn't even really exist (at least in any mainstream form).

Personally I only worry about game library quality.

But that means I don't worry at all, as the Xbox 360 has always been on top.

I think the internet was better before it went all mainstream. I remember it years ago.

I guess if this is what gamers want to consider as something to talk about then I guess I have no issues with that, I just wish people wouldn't feel the need to bring it up regardless of the topic at hand and regardless of the forum area in which the topic resides. Sales are nice to talk about every once in a while but not in every single topic.

Anyways, thanks for replying Montana.

I agree with what MontanaHatchet said plus a lot of older sales numbers are very inaccurate especially pre PS1 era so their isn't much to talk about.

@Bolded

That is why you are cool.

@Italized

Completely subjective. I for example love my 360 and the games right now, enough to sideline my PS3 for the last 2 months, but I still think the PS3 library is superior and only continues to get better each passing month.

One of my favorite games of all times Shenmue bombed big time when it comes to sales but that doesn't take anything away from its greatness.

Which is why you don't own a PS2?
