Do people worry too much about sales numbers now a days instead of just focusing on the games? I ask this because not too long ago we had this article about how gamers worry too much about gaming sales.

Now I know this does not account for everyone, but now when I go to Gamefaqs or just about any gaming site for that matter I tend to see threads about a game's sales with people trolling the game based on sales numbers while completely ignoring what a gamer should really care about, which is whether or not the game is actuall fun to play.
So maybe I missed out on all that happened on the net last gen, so I ask, "Has it always been this way?"
To be honest it gets quite tiresome when I go to a site like Gamefaqs to ask a question about a game only to have someone come in and shit all over the game in question because some game on some other console sold better. What does it matter?
Sorry for the mini-rant to go with my question.
