Could they buy EA?

Apple is bringing in some serious cash since the iPhone released, and I mean serious cash. They could buy pretty much anything at the moment, hell they could buy Microsoft if Gates allowed it.

And Sony Computer Entertainment Division if they wanted also.

MS is out of apples reach for now, though in a few years maybe...... the sony corporation though as a whole they could do right now.... they could do the big N too, but that would require alot of work and debt.... its easier for them to buy sony, almost all of it in cash ..... N is worth about double the entire sony corporation

There would be Apple's entry into the industry. One great hell of an entry.

If this were to happen (and I'm pretty sure this is fake) I would suspect Apple would only purchase a stuido or two from EA, specifically the ones that make games for the app store (EA Mobile is a big developer on there), of course they could leverage a purchase of the entirety of EA into an awesome console or they could become the freaking greatest third party developer out there.

Currently dreaming of: DKC4 or Sonic the Hedgehog 4 (classic 2D platformers) for WiiWare, Smash Bros. for DSi, New Super Mario World for DSi, a Wii remake or true sequel of Final Fantasy Tactics.

One down, hopefully more awesomeness to come.

I'm not sure as to what ends...maybe to get more games for the Mac computers? This would be a strange move, as apple has no compentcy or focus in this area. This would be like M$ taking over a movie studio.

I don't think it's quite that outlandish. Apple makes all kinds of hardware which needs software, and just about any kind of software except games. It makes sense if they're looking for something to broaden their software portfolio so they can sell more hardware. And EA's software could be used to help sell desktops, laptops, iPhones and iPod Touches. Perhaps even a followup device to the Apple TV which downloads entertainment software from the app store...

I'm no financial wiz, but even if they're undervalued and hemorrhaging money, EA doesn't seem like a particularly easy takeover target to my mind.

What I mean by this is how a company makes money...EA is all about multi-platform support and development, whereas Apple has been given a pass on being sole source.  There are far better way to gain more entertianment support for your platform, then trying to buy one of the largest game publishers on the market.  Maybe, it's possible, but this would be the biggest leap from Apple traditional tightly focus approach to it's efforts.  Regardless, any attempt to buy EA would serious spike the price for the stock of EA, and probably double the asking price.

buh bye MS. spending all that cash trying to crush Sony has left you too weak to fight the bigger war vs. Apple and Google.

It would be like SNES vs. Genesis.  Both companies were so into each other's fight only to be blindsided by another company (Sony).

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

More than that, I think Apple could possibly lose more than they gain by moving toward first party development. The App Store has been a success due to low barriers to entry. Having to compete with a first party juggernaut might scare away some of the third party developers.

This rumor is ridiculous to begin with. Apple's developed a strategy of building product lines that complement eachother. Your comment that it would be like Microsoft buying a movie studio was dead on the money. There's no way that EA could be assimilated into Apple and the result would be a mess of corporate infighting. It would weaken both companies.

They have a little less than 12 billion in cash and equivalents so it is possible to buy Apple at 6.8 billion market cap...

However, that is very different than what Apple usually does; which is, Apple hordes cash away.

I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.

Not to mention having PC game developers bolting to other companies.  You might buy EA, but the workforce will be free to leave..and they probably would.

I would shit my pants if this actually happens. I talk a lot of shit about EA sometimes but I hope not.

What Mac needs to work on is making cheaper computers and making high end gaming PCs. Make Apple appealing to PC gamers and getting game companies develop serious games for their OS. Will never happen though and I could only imagine the price on an Apple gaming computer.
