Forums - Gaming - If Sony and MS copy Nintendo

What kind of games do you think we could expect?
Your in the movies type crap and Wii Sports ripoffs. Oh and ports of old wii casual crap.
Do you think we might get a lot of amazing software, or would it be a lot of crap? Not even Microsoft and Sony could make games as kid friendly and mainstream as Nintendo. Ninty have the experience, and of course marketing capability, to sell this type of game to this type of audience.

Do you think they could implement it better than Nintendo does? Maybe, i totally agree that Ninty are stupid about implementation of their tech in 3rd party games and even in their own. Add Wiifit BB and the Wii speak to that list.

Would 360 be in a really good position, being the cheapest console? Not at all. Your asking whether 50 million, plus 100 million DS owners, who are already used to Nintendo's casual branding, will suddenly up and switch to a system with NO KIDS GAMES. Aint gonna happen.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

If Sony and MS copy Nintendo, then the gameplay renaissance might finally really take root. We're talking new golden age, folks, and one sorely needed after the utter stagnation that the last two generations (and HD's attempt at this generation) have embodied.

Complexity is not depth. Machismo is not maturity. Obsession is not dedication. Tedium is not challenge. Support gaming: support the Wii.

What do I hate about modern gaming? I hate tedium replacing challenge, complexity replacing depth, and domination replacing entertainment. I hate the outsourcing of mechanics to physics textbooks, art direction to photocopiers, and story to cheap Hollywood screenwriters. I hate the confusion of obsession with dedication, style with substance, new with gimmicky, old with obsolete, new with evolutionary, and old with time-tested.
There is much to hate about modern gaming. That is why I support the Wii.

Well mm, to be honest, I think that games like wiifit actually sell more systems than the kiddie games do.
If MS can come up with some good software that appeals to adult singles, for example, cooking games, exercise, other training games, do you think people would switch, especially if the SW could really rival the wii games?

As far as brand goes... I'm not really too sure how strong the Nintendo brand is in comparison to MS when it comes to casual gaming.

I have a strong feeling we'll get alot of crap...

4 ≈ One

FPS would just be comparable to mouse and keyboard (or so some would claim) which would mean that Halo, Killzone, Resistance all become vanilla FPS.

I'd predict the rise of the home console RTS though.

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

It's all about the software, obviously. If Sony and Microsoft can build a compelling lineup for their motin controllers, they'll do fine, if not, then they'll fail.

The problem is one of design philosophy, though. Nintendo designs peripherals to suit a game, they don't design games to suit peripherals. I don't know how this philosophy is implemented (or if it is at all) in Sony or Microsoft (or any of Sony and Microsoft's subsidiaries), so we cacn't know how successful they'll be at it.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.
