 Actually, no. The first Xbox ended its short life netting Microsoft a total profit of....  over minus 4.5 BILLION dollars. The gamecube sold a little less yes, but Nintendo didn't lose money or nowhere near that kind of money.

Ask Microsoft what would they have preffered :  finishing in a prettier " 2nd place in market-share" selling some thousand units more but with a loss of over 4.5 billions or finishing "last" selling a little less but staying in the black or very close to it?

sometimes one must fail hard so one day they can finish first instead of second. Any console that's not first is still a loser.
