i really like Castlevania..
but i'll go with Nintendo, they're simply the best in platformers.
There's no contest. Someone can get away with saying Nintendo's core values have shifted, say that they don't like motion control, Friend Codes fail (I agree), but the one area where they are absolutely untouchable is the quality of their platformers.
Hell, Mario Sunshine, widely considered to be the 'worst' game in the franchise since SMB2, still got a 91% average on Gamerankings. Not that they're a reliable metric, but you get my point.

| SmokedHostage said: It's too hard but Nintendo is surely no. 1. RARE and Capcom platformers are superb though. I can't really call Castlevania or Contra, platformers in the traditional sense but they're both wonderful series. WTF? LOL SEGA has been awful since after Sonic Advance 1. |
SmokedHostage, I read from your profile that you're only 19 years old. Let me inform you about Contra and Castlevania.
Castlevania is the definition of a Platformer. In Castlevania you jump from platform to platform and just like in Mega Man, you 'shoot' by hurling axes and you fight a boss in the end of each level. In Contra you jump from platforms upwards or down to platforms below. You shoot enemies just like in Mega Man and fight bosses at the end of each level.
:/

Castlevania and Contra may be platformers in the technical sense, but that isn't the focus of the gameplay nor are they prime examples of the "platforming" genre. It's a moot point though, as no one can challenge Nintendo's dominance in the ever-shrinking category of such games.

Hates Nomura. Tagged: GooseGaws - <--- Has better taste in games than you. |
Nintendo
then a little behind: Rare
then just an iota behind: Capcom
for me
Currently dreaming of: DKC4 or Sonic the Hedgehog 4 (classic 2D platformers) for WiiWare, Smash Bros. for DSi, New Super Mario World for DSi, a Wii remake or true sequel of Final Fantasy Tactics.
One down, hopefully more awesomeness to come.
Capcom's platformers are generally better than Nintendo's.
Nintendo's platformers haven't been as good as they once were. I would put the order like this:
1.)Capcom
2.)Konami
3.)Nintendo
4.)Insomniac
5.)Naughty Dog
Sega and Rare are one-hit wonders. Don't even mention them amongst the greats.
Nintendo, Capcom and Konami are pretty even; they're easily the top 3 without question. Nintendo has the best single series with Mario, but Capcom beats them in numbers. Konami is a good mix of quality and quanity.
All five are amazing, though. I would put Nintendo at the top if they released more platformers. I think 3 is a good spot for them. Platformers are my favorite genre lol.
