Forums - Sony - Do you think GoW3 will move much HW?

I mean if Motor Storm can move 3+ million............

and would you consider it a disappointment if God of Wars 3 doesn't?

@CGI-Quality

In the same sense, Hannah Montana: The Movie could be a system seller although it might not move a lot of systems. So are all bundled games.

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

If Killzone 2 can move hardware, God of War III can move hardware.

It's from a popular series with a pretty hardcore following and relatively large fanbase. And (anecdotal data ftw!) everyone I know who owned God of War either owns a PS3 already (like me) or intends to buy one soon.

The thing is that the effect won't be that visible, because it won't be a huge one week bump (like MGS4), it's a prolonged effect that's lasted pretty much since the PS3's launch.

Killzone 2 is a FPS which is a very popular genre. God of War is a button mashing hack n slash and that genre isn't very popular. The series has also sold less and less with each release. I'm sure it'll get solid sales but it won't do a great job moving hardware.

It'll sell a few systems in North America, but that's it. Assuming it hits in March with not much else around it, I could see a 10-20k bump. Though 10k bumps in NA happen occasionally for no reason, lol.

It's kind've sad how little they sell.  The first God of War was the highest selling game of its type last gen, and it sits at a mere 3.21 million.

God of War II would've probably reached a similar number, but it's legs were seriously cut short by the next gen.  Three years into God of War's life, teh game was still pulling 4-5k a week in North America.  Three years into God of War II's life (March 2010), ps2 games might not even be sold anymore.  Or at least not new ones, anyway.

But the game opened at over 600k (we have it sitting at 559k week one without European data), so it definitely has a decent sized fanbase.

Oh no doubt at all GOW III will sell very well, for one it will not release in that akward time when the next generation of consoles release. On top of that it was said that GOW 2 outsold the first and have a look at the PSP sales for GOW: COO compared to other PSP games.

It's a pretty big franchise, I fully expect it to be in the top 3 in NPD the month the game releases. Rest assured it will have no problem getting to 3 million.

People act like the PS2 isn't relevant anymore but it still pulls in great sales. It gets about half the sales of the PS3 which isn't bad at all considering how many it already sold. Even software sales are comparable to current gen ports. In some cases the PS2 is still a better software mover than the Wii.

God of War sold great because it was the first in the series, people were interested, and the large userbase. The sequel didn't do as well simply because people didn't care enough to play the next game. It isn't unusual for a series to sell less copies with the next release. For example I doubt Resistance 2, Uncharted 2, and Motorstorm PR will reach the sales of their predecessor.
