Forums - Gaming - Halo 3's Success Due To Lack of Xbox 360 Exclusives

The New York Times said something similar to my earlier statement. "If you loved "Halo 2," you will feel just the same about Halo 3. If you played "Halo 2" and couldn’t figure out what all the fuss was about, Halo 3 is not the revelatory experience that will change your view of the series forever."

that just about sums up every single game out there... >_>

Not necessarily.  There are some sequels that tweak the existing stuff and are mostly the same experience (Halo and Zelda) and there are some sequels that fix a lot of what was wrong with the previous game(s) and are able to attract people who weren't previously interested.  IMO, Killzone 2 did the latter and I expect Red Steel 2 will do the same.  I'm sure other people can think of other examples from both categories.  There's nothing wrong with either approach.

Keep this in mind when reading what I type...

I've been gaming longer than many of you have been alive.

I'll give you that...but still for the most part, the majority of sequals are either worse or just don't improve on a whole lot. granted halo 3 did actually improve a bunch...forge anyone??  i know people that play halo 3 just to forge, or how about theater?? Halo 3's campain might not have offered too many new things, but the rest of the game leaped quite a bit.

Wait wait, why are MGS4, Heavenly Sword, Uncharted etc. "AAA" exclusives and games like Mass Effect, Forza, Fable, Dead or Alive 4 not?

I consider Mass Effect AAA, if it's any consolation.  I'm looking forward to playing it.  I may buy it on the PC before I get a 360, however.

Oh, I forgot to add that I don't consider Heavenly Sword to be one of the PS3's AAA titles.  Fun, but short and with lots of flaws.

Not sure why anyone would consider Heavenly Sword a AAA title, it's only a A on metacritic.

It's PS3 exclusive, though.

I'm not sure if I follow, sorry.  My best guess is since a PS3 exclusive, fanboys think it's AAA, right?

It's PS3 exclusive, therefore it is AAA. That's not fanboyism, that's fact.

Dave Halverson gave Heavenly Sword a 10 out of 10 in Play Magazine and he still lists it in the top 5 of this gen.  That's the same Dave Halverson that founded Diehard Gamefan folks.

doug - Do you realize that for any given genre - racing, platformer, music, RTS, and so on, it's usually not the #1 seller that is the 'best'?

I mean, Goldeneye was definitely not the best shooter when it came out. But it sold massive numbers because it was more than the sum of it's parts - it caught fire and became a great social game that everyone wanted to play their friends at. Same went for Pong, The Sims, World of Warcraft, and many more.

I am well beyond being pro-Halo in any respect. I prefer Call of Duty for FPSes. But I see why people like Halo: It's accessible, well-known, very polished, few flaws, and works great. It's not as flashy as other games, but isn't weak in any one area. Does that make it bad? No, not really. It just happens to be popular. You can't deride that or be apologetic. It is what it is. And as much as I'd prefer to see other FPSes get more sales (although Modern Warfare got the sales it did indeed deserve) it's good to see that at least one quality game had fantastic sales.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

She might claim to have honest opinion, but when she mentions motorstorm and ignores Forza 2/project gotham racing 3/4 and mentions TRIPLE A games like Heavenly Sword (!!!) but fails to mention one of the game of the year candidate Mass effect, it's really fanboy (fangirl?) to the max!

She also mentions that L4D is outdated news, but hello? Is anyone talking about Motorstorm or resistance? LBP doesn't appear much in our forum nowadays.

Phooey I say to that..Left 4 Dead did so good it's being Rereleased.....biased people suck

Left 4 Dead 2.13mil

Ressistance 3.59mil

Heavenly Sword 1.36mil

Uncharted 2.33mil

what's your point???

Since Halo 3 has launch it is still the most played game this gen year after year..

I think this sums it up well. This is from the Metacritic page for Halo 3. The review is from 360 Gamer Magazine UK. "Anyone new to Halo probably won't see what all the fuss is about, completely confused as to why this third installment is so important to so many people. It's good, and there's enough here to make for a memorable game, but how memorable depends mostly on how invested you are in the franchise already." I take this to mean that the people who think that Halo 3 is the greatest thing since sliced bread are people who are very invested in the series. That makes sense. What this review and some of the rest of us are trying to say, I think, is that Halo 3 is great as a part of an entire body of work. When taken on its own, this is a great game, but the declarations of it being the greatest thing ever might be lost on someone new to the series. IMO, the Gears of War series is a FAR FAR more compelling reason to own a 360.

You could replace every reference to Halo in this post with a reference to Metal Gear Solid and it wouldn't lose any meaning at all.  People just have different tastes in gaming, and lots of people [read: fanboys] aren't clued in to that fact yet.

This post doesnt really make sense, it quotes heavenly sword and little big planet as succesful exclusives when several 360 exclusives such as Mass Effect, Crackdown are superior in both sales and in critical reception (yet aren't mentioned!)
