Can't wait for next gen when people here will either go; "Microsoft and Sony are just copying everything from Nintendo." or; "Microsoft and Sony are fools not to follow the same bussiness model and concepts as Nintendo."
Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

That is true. It doesn't help that they initially derided the Wii as a novelty and a gimmick, though. And they continue to do so on occasion.

Indeed he does.. I think they'll go with motion sensing eventually but it's a natural progression, Nintendo have created the new standard and it's only a matter of time before the others follow.. It's not a bad thing but they will copy just as they've always done..

This is true.  It will be extremely funny to me when all the "hardcore" that are bitching about "waggle" talk about how awesome it is when it's on their system.

Somehow they got it in their heads that only casual games can be made with motion controls.  They work great for hardcore games too (the immersion in Godfather on Wii was fantastic for instance), but I suppose they just want something to whine about.

that looks like head tracking as well..

Look at the source. Look at the author.

It's Luke Plucket trying to find a reason for Wii failure. That's the rep he has. And why else talk about something that has been rumored for a year.

Introducing motion this late in the cycle would not be wise from a business or PR standpoint. Not having it next cycle would not be wise either.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

Ultimately, this is just a control scheme.

We all graduated from the atari-style joystick to 'modern' console controllers a long while ago. All Nintendo's done is proven out another control scheme. It's completely expected that it'll spread just like the controller and the mouse have previously (Windows is copying Mac! ...who copied Xerox).

In fact, it's unlikely that *something* like waggle won't be in all of the next-gen of systems; it's not like Nintendo's made a killing off of it so far, and still sell boat-loads of software for what is now essentially pure profit.

Merely having this as an alternate control scheme doesn't mean that the controller-based games are going away.

That said, whether this would succeed or fail depends on whether they go all in, or they just release it as another eye toy. Developers aren't going to limit their potential purchasers to only those who have an add-on peripheral.

No I don't..

Their rumble was better, their analogues were much better.. they saved third party developers from the extreme license costs that nintendo had put on publishing games on their systems. Not to mention they wanted to control what was at all released.

Furthermore they brought the console out of the kids room and into the living room, made it something cool for adults to play too, they convinced developers to go 3d on the ps1 despite many developers still wanting to stick to 2d games (they were afread of the expenses versus the results so sony brought in psygnosis who created and showed off some tech demos.. for instance the one of the dinosaur .. and the one with the mantis underwater... Also made them realise the expense jump wouldn't be as big as they had anticipated which all was things that convinced the developers to go 3d.  )

AND ! They were the ones who brought motion sensing in first to many with the eyetoy. Not only that, the ps2 has various other third party motion controllers.. and accessories.. I know the arcade point n shoot thing was around way before.. but the eye toy greatly expanded on it and made it more common.

They also had a patent for a wii like controller in 2004. Way before nintendo even concidered their controller..

So. I think you guys might be the ones who needed that history lesson

What really happened was all of the kids that played video games before Sony ever made a system had grown up.  Sony didn't do anything magical here.

Sega had motion addons and I'm pretty sure they were out before Sony's.

Everything I've read about the wii controller says it started development in 2001.

Nothing magical ? the ps1 sold more than twice as many consoles as any other console before it. Not only that, it's the second highest selling console of all time only surpassed by the playstation 2. Unless all of those kids somehow cloned themselves as they grew up.. i don't really see that happening. Especially concidering many kids who had a snes got a n64 and no ps1. So i believe you are very wrong here. Not only that, but most kids from the snes era would still be kids .. or atleast not have their own apartments by the time the ps1 came out.

Yes but did they go mainstream in any way ? cause the eyetoy most certainly did.

I know the arcade point n shoot thing was around way before.. but the eye toy greatly expanded on it and made it more common.

So how does that translate to sony copying the wiimote ?
